Massett Indians Launch King George Halibut Schooner

The Massett Indians fish trade gains momentum as the sixty foot schooner King George, built by the tribesmen and owned by seven Massett men, sails on its first halibut run. Auxiliary gasoline boats aid catching and hauling the catch to the vessel. Outfitted in Prince Rupert, the King George awaits return to port with interest in its movements.

Halibut Fleet Overloads Port as Catch Soars Along Coast

Fishing boats arrive loaded with halibut from ports along the West Coast. Prince Rupert’s disabled schooner nears port after towing attempts. fleets from Atlin and other ports rush in while fish cars and possibly a special eastbound train prepare for shipments. The Cold Storage line reports sizable early arrivals and improved weather promises continued strong catches. Seattle reports top quality halibut, with east markets alerted to the superior catch. The George R E Foster is expected to bring a large cargo, potentially doubling recent totals.

Pacific Great Eastern Railway plans a mixed passenger and freight service as rails reach Lillooet, 120 miles from Squamish. Track extends to within 15 miles of Lillooet with grading nearly complete. A. H. Sperry notes the target date around February 15 and Griffin inspects the right of way this week.

Planking Tenders Discussed At City Council Meeting

Council discussed bids for plank and new construction linked to regulation. A forty ton scow demand was noted as part of supply needs including bait ice and other items from Canadian suppliers. The meeting also covered church anniversary arrangements and a礼 small social event at the Steele Block with 25 couples attending.

Lieut. L Bullock-Webster heads to active service with Capt Clayton's company. His nephew Bullock-Webster joined the First Canadian Contingent from Edmonton. Brother Arthur served in the Boer War from Similkameen. A S H Lieut Bullock-Webster volunteered for the Boer War but was halted by ill health. Cousin Ansell Bullock left Nova Scotia in 1879 for the Zulu War as a volunteer.

Captain J W Troup manager of the Coast Service returns home from Montreal after talks with CP R officials He visited Port McNichol on the Great Lakes run He notes extreme cold in Montreal and Winnipes 35 degrees below zero He says no new Princess steamers will be added this year and that the current fleet will be maintained He mentions a report about St George from St Johns NL being brought in is incorrect He sees both Canadian and American travelers favoring water routes and warns about risks if new vessels face disasters at sea But he expects CPR to avoid duplicating ships if trouble arises.

Colonel Thompson Heads North To Inspect Prince Rupert Waterfront
