Franklin County and the city secured $120,000 in highway funds for paving Eighth West and Eighth East streets under the Federal Air Highway act. State Sen. Reed Burge confirms the joint application for matching funds. The grant covers off system highway use on a proportionate basis statewide. County share was planned at about $35,000.
The editorial urges cooperative funding for the $120,000 off system highway grant. It questions how matching money will be raised, whether LSDs are required, and if city and county must share costs beyond taxes. It calls for citizen input, timely decisions, and joint action to benefit the area and future growth.
The Preston South Stake Conference runs Saturday and Sunday September 7 and 8 with Saturday at 7 30 p m and Sunday at 10 a m conducted by President Paul C Woodward. Attendees include priesthood quorums leaders relief society presidencies and ward officers.
Franklin County deputies arrested two juveniles in separate raids for growing marijuana within a ten day span. A 15-year-old was taken into custody in Dayton on August 27 and a 17-year-old in Glendale on August 28, part of a run of four youths arrested in three weeks for cultivating cannabis. A prior incident three weeks earlier in Weston Canyon involved Utah juveniles. Glen Keller of Mink Creek reported the theft of a 100 pound red and white pig valued at 50 dollars from his farm on August 1.
A 23 year old Preston man remained in critical condition at Logan Hospital after a headon crash on State Highway 34 in Thatcher last Saturday morning. Alan Kelly Weaver drove a 1972 Ford that crossed the center line and struck a 1966 Oldsmobile carrying five Salt Lake City residents. All injured were taken to Franklin County Hospital or Logan Hospital. Weaver and others received treatment and were later discharged or transferred. The crash remained under investigation Tuesday with officials unable to obtain driver statements.
A prenatal class for all expectant parents will start at Franklin County Memorial Hospital in Preston on Tuesday. The session begins at 6 30 pm in the hospital classroom and interested individuals may go directly to the hospital or call Connie Maughan at 852-0867 for more information.
U S Border Patrol official Bob Wylie of Twin Falls reports 24 Mexican Nationals were picked up in Franklin County last weekend with 23 captured Sunday in a labor camp raid. Five or six more were detained by Franklin County deputies. They are to be transported to Twin Falls and sent back to Mexico once 40 are collected. Wylie says many are farm laborers and family men who send remittances home, noting hundreds have been sent back this year in Southeastern Idaho.
