A week of rain slowed beet and potato harvesting but allowed moisture for wheat. Farmers anticipate a strong 1948 yield as Jed Lewis notes beets progress well and storage space becomes tight. The state ag department reports favorable late harvests and above average precipitation across regions.
The American Legion in Idaho launches its annual membership drive with a contest between Preston and Bonners Ferry posts. The sixth district convention in Boise featured the challenge with a forfeit of venison or pheasants if the challenger loses, and a December 4 deadline marking Pearl Harbor Day.
The Preston Knife and Fork Club canceled its second meeting planned for Monday evening after the speaker Earl Parker Hanson a noted engineer and author could not attend due to laryngitis. Hanson sent a message from Raton New Mexico explaining he should rest at least a week. Officials failed to secure a substitute speaker via the national organization. The next meeting is rescheduled for November 20 with Willard Mayberry of Kansas to speak.
Mayor Ernest Eberhard announces steps to draft a zoning ordinance for Preston. March Hopkins chairs the zoning committee with Ivan Goff assisting, as they study needs and compare methods from other cities to guide growth, sanitation, fire prevention, and property values.
Judge L E Glennon sentenced Dean William Kenworthy after a jury found him guilty of grand larceny for stealing about $2000 in merchandise from Palmer Implement Company in May. Kenworthy was placed in custody of Sheriff Lee Hansen for transfer to Boise to serve up to 14 years at hard labor. He and two accomplices were captured by Reno officers and later returned to Preston to await trial. One accomplice, Russom, asked to appear before a district judge in Pocatello. continued on page 10.
Preston Man Sorensen finds a young elk badly injured on a hillside near Preston. He frees it, contacts Ranger Ed Scholes, and builds a sled to move the animal to a canyon road. The elk is then transported home where Sorensen treats its injured legs daily and invites visitors with care to avoid disturbance.
About 800 delegates from 15 posts convened for the sixth district American Legion and Auxiliary session in Brookside with a luncheon at Randall's cafe and meetings at the courthouse. State Department Commander Charles R. Howe spoke at the banquet, urging service to disabled veterans and dependents, and warning that greed, intolerance, and abuse of liberty threaten American democracy and enable communism.
Adam A Keller 73 of 175 East Oneida St passed away Wednesday at 5 30 p m after a lingering illness Born February 14 1874 in Mantua Utah he was a son of James M and Anna C Larson Keller He married Elvena Christensen April 3 1912 in the Salt Lake temple He lived much of his life at Mink Creek near Preston where he farmed He was active in the LDS church serving in the priesthood quorum presidency at Mink Creek He served as an LDS missionary in Germany from 1906 to 1909 At his death he was a high priest in the Preston fourth ward Surviving are his wife and eight sons and daughters Continued on page 10
A special committee of the Preston Jaycees outlined plans for a Halloween party for local youths on October 31. The event aims to entertain and steer youngsters away from mischief with a parade, free movie, refreshments, and other activities to be announced next week.
A Sunday meeting established a new LDS ward from parts of the third and fourth wards affecting residents in the proposed area. The Oneida Stake presidency recommended the move, approving a new bishopric with Rulent Kellerai ne as president and Jack Cherrington and Harold Hansen as counselors.
Four Preston students and others were honored at the University of Idaho annual awards assembly. Calvin Q. Morrison of Preston won the American Institute of Chemical Engineers annual junior award for highest academic standing. James W. Johnson of Preston was the honored sophomore. Nada Gil received a $250 Standard Oil scholarship for 4 H and vocational agriculture workers entering the college of agriculture. Continued on page 10.
Preston FFA team led by Cecil LeFevre Doyle Dunkley and Clair Hallingworth won first place at the annual Idaho Spud Show in Shelley. The team scored 758 of 900, edging Midway by 41 points and Shelley by 91.5. LeFevre was high-point individual with 261, four ahead of Midway’s second.
Franklin County Sugar Company reports a precarious car supply for beet movement, with shortages causing occasional early shutdowns. Harvesters and factory workers have performed well despite weather and deer season delaying progress. Union Pacific cites broad equipment distribution and competing coal and grain shipments as ongoing factors.
City police announce a statewide effort targeting parking meter and ordinance violators who ignore tickets. After second notification by mail, those who do not report to the city office may face arrest warrants. Chief Durwood Hull says cooperation is rising but a few still fail to acknowledge notices.

Preston Rifle club held a Sunday shoot with Pete Jorgenson as high scorer at 46.86 aggregate and his son Vic close behind at 46. Officials plan a turkey shoot and remind members not to drive on the range, with entry through the gates at Don Whittle’s field.
Rainy field and slippery ball hampered play as Malad and Preston battled to a 0–0 tie. Both teams threatened twice with Malad close to a score on a pass near the Indian goal line but ruled out, and Preston reaching the 10 yard line twice but stopped on downs. Bob Bunker’s team heads to a two week idle period before facing Fielding High of Paris on Oct 31.
The Oneida stake holds a weekend conference with Thorpe B. Isaacson of the presiding bishop's office and Stayner of the general welfare committee. Meetings begin Saturday at 8 p.m. in the fourth ward chapel with priesthood leadership sessions, and Sunday includes general priesthood and mothers and daughters meetings followed by General Conference sessions at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m in the high school auditorium.
Jim Taylor, custodian at the courthouse, had his birthday observed Tuesday by flag-raising at the courthouse. Flags were flown for the Sixth District American Legion convention, but the county building flag was forgotten until County Auditor Cleo Swenson fixed it, leaving the big flag atop the pole through Tuesday.
The Preston Chamber of Commerce board accepted Melvin M. Reeves resignation as secretary and named Vaughn J. Greaves to fill the post. Reeves, a longtime local businessman and former Army Reserve captain, will enter private business as Reeves Warehouse Co. in Preston and is currently in Seattle serving as judge at the Washington State Championship Horse Show.
Students return to classrooms Monday after two weeks helping with beet and potato harvests. About 50 percent of beets topped. only those still needed will get permits to stay on jobs. Harland Simmons says many students idle. Jed Lewis notes farm labor may finish beet harvest before weather closes in.
