Child Bitten by Sow at Riverdale Home

Five year old Shannon Packer, daughter of Mr and Mrs Monte Packer of Riverdale, was bitten and tossed by a large sow Saturday afternoon. She suffered a large slash and multiple cuts and scratches on her left thigh and back before her mother rescued her.

Afton Victim Of Indians Triumph In Wyoming

Preston High School Indians defeated Afton 20 to 0 at Afton Wyoming marking their third win in four games and a bye until Oct 24 when Malad visits. Ivan Davis scored the first touchdown on a 40 yard reverse, Carl Swainston added the extra point and later TDs followed by Edgley and Swainston points. Wyoming squad managed three first downs and few penalties as Aston and Preston halted Afton’s advances.

Caroline Petersen Pioneer County Lady Honored in Dayton

Caroline E Larsen Petersen, born Oct. 11, 1869 in Mendon Utah, will celebrate her 83rd birthday with an open house at her Dayton home. Widowed 22 years, she raised ten children, taught, and endured pioneer life across Mink Creek Bear River and Oneida narrows before moving to Dayton in 1911.

TV Power Lines Pushing Toward Utah Transmitters Peak Sites

Utah Power and Light crews rush completion of two 12 500-volt lines to serve new TV transmitters atop the Oquirrh mountains west of Salt Lake City. When active this fall they will beam TV to homes from Preston in the north to Cove in Millard County, with towers at high elevations among rugged terrain. Transmitters aim to reach about 87 percent of Utah residents.

Polio Foundation Names New Franklin County Officers

The Franklin county chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis elected new officers led by chairman Donald Podge. Others include L A Bright as vice chairman and Quinten Crockett as March of Dimes chair, with cooperation planned with medical authorities and hospitals as six polio cases are reported in the county, three under treatment.

Idaho treasurer reports 886 798 from the U S forest service for distribution to counties. Franklin county gets 4 186 while amounts range from two cents to 226 536 for Idaho county based on forest service land within each county. Payments cover the year ending June 30 from forest service receipts.

Mayor Dunn issued a proclamation designating the week starting Oct 5 as National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week. The proclamation emphasizes that when handicapped workers are placed in suited positions their productive capacity is proven and calls for greater understanding of their employment capabilities and methods to match abilities with jobs.

Sugar Beet Harvest to Start Across Districts Saturday

Franklin County Sugar Co. official Thomas Heath says sugar beet harvest will begin this Saturday in all districts, with beets deliverable only to Thorenson and factory dumps. The operation runs 25 days starting mid October, weather dependent, and school boards will dismiss to allow harvesting.

Knife, Fork Club Names Criminologist as Next Speaker

Dr. David Dressler, criminologist and author, will be guest of honor at the Preston Knife and Fork Club. The meeting, at the courthouse next Thursday evening, will draw a large crowd to hear his talk on Beating the Bunco. Dressler, born in Kentucky in 1907, earned Ph.D. at the University of Chicago and an M.A. from Columbia.

Public Land Group Meeting In Salt Lake City

County Auditor Cleo Swenson attended a Saturday meeting in Salt Lake City representing Idaho as secretary treasurer of the Idaho Association of Commissioners and Clerks.
