The Franklin county canning center reports reaching the 100000 can milestone for this year. Lincoln A. Orme, supervisor, notes this season's run includes garden vegetables and fruit, with September totaling 49000 cans.
Joy Christensen Wallgren of Preston died this morning in an Idaho Falls hospital after a period of critical illness following the loss of a baby ten days earlier. Her husband, a first lieutenant in the army signal corps, had been an engineer at KPST when it opened and they were relocating to Corvallis Oregon to teach ROTC. They leave a six year old daughter.
Jefferson school will host a talent contest next week with four groups and a winner from each. Readings feature Judith Nash and Jule Hammond. dancing by Marion Beveridge and Karen Dunn. duets and solos by Maureen Maughan, Maureen Perkins, Beverly Spackman, Nancy Winn. and performances by Rebecca Hawkes, Helen Wakley, Jeannie Webb, Janice Mecham, Ala deen Goff, Glenda Sutton, Diane Palmer, Julie Simmons, Loenza Nielsen, Carol Anderson, Jolene Fellows.
The West Side High School band directed by Mrs Lillian Knudson attended a United States Navy Band concert at Utah State Agricultural College field house in Logan Monday afternoon at 2 30. De Lemar Palmer of the faculty drove the school bus providing band transportation.
Grace Red Devils dominated West Side High with seven touchdowns and four extra points as Grace won 46 to 0. The Pirates faced setbacks including an untrained substitute quarterback after Howell was stricken with polio and injuries to fullback Herman Dollar and halfback Austin, who broke his leg and will use crutches weeks.
The rural youth talent fund, a Farm Bureau youth program, will run again in this county guided by Mrs. Carol McEntire. The first program starts Oct 17 with contestants from each local. locals winner advance to a district contest in Preston around Oct 20 at the Franklin County Rural Youth hosts a talk meet and talent find for ages 18 to 29 registering at the Farm Bureau office Thursday afternoons.
A fish and game drawing last week granted 150 elk permits for Franklin County from 234 applications. The list names winners across Franklin, Weston, Clifton, Dayton, Mink Creek, Banida and Swan Lake areas including Preston Allred, Ray Almond, Nina Almond, and many others.
W. H. Pete Jensen Democratic candidate for Congress spoke in Franklin county urging bills for adequate tax lien payments on federally owned land. He noted 64 of every 100 acres in Idaho are federal owned, reducing local tax receipts and straining schools and county offices. Jensen highlighted 98 050 acres in Franklin county and 33 780 102 acres in Idaho.
Local ad announces a dot counting contest with a first prize sewing machine and additional prize certificates. Submissions must be postmarked by October 11 and entered via the newspaper or a facsimile to Preston Electric and Furniture Co. A tie will be decided by neatness. grand prize only. Eligibility excludes store employees, the newspaper's staff, and their families.
Preston High school band of 60 members is invited to represent the University of Idaho at the Aggie-Vandal football game in Logan on Saturday Oct 11. The group includes a 14 piece dance band and ensemble units. They performed on homecoming and attended a Navy band concert in Logan.
The Franklin county rural youth talk meet will be held Wednesday night October 8 at 9 p m Mrs Earl McEntire notes the winner goes to the state convention November 17 18 and 19 at Pocatello to compete for state honors and a paid trip to the national Parm Bureau convention in Seattle December 8 9 10 and 11 Contestants ages 18 to 28 may use reference material from the county Farm Bureau office The topic is Who Shall Speak for the Farmers Former contestants Dee Sharp Brent Nash and Margene Hansen have attended state events LaMar Frandsen of Shelley placed second in Chicago last year.
Junior High School nominates candidates for two tickets. President candidates are McKee Crawford and Roger Wooley with Bonnie Pinson and Scott Knudson as vice presidents. Secretary nominees are Kimber Nielson and Evelyn Edgley with song leader Cinnie Jean Affleck.
A banquet at the Oneida stake house raised funds for grounds improvement under Ernest Olsen’s finance leadership. Over 1,000 tickets were sold with donations of farm produce and goods from local firms. Plans include oil and gravel parking, a reunion area, and a stake softball ball diamond.
Students will miss Thursday and Friday due to a teachers institute at Pocatello. During Oct 13-17 pupils will be dismissed to help harvest beets and potatoes. All except first six grades in several towns will be excused.
Sheriff Lee Hansen announced that State Forester Guernsey extended the fire season until Oct. 16 due to dry weather. He warned no burning without a permit.
Elaine Waterlaus and John Willis pose by prizes for the Oneida stake M-Men and Gleaners dance name contest. Weekly dances are held every Saturday at the Oneida stake house. Grand prize is a Westinghouse mixer. entries close October 17.
Five former Idaho air guard members met at the advanced fighter airstrip in Korea. The group includes First Lts Donald Headrick William S Dursteler and Harry E O Neil and Captain Fay E Ayers. The Mustang fighter bomber in the center was formerly attached to the Idaho guard. The 18th fighter bomber wing has flown over 45000 combat sorties in Korea.
Preston Indians and Tooele High School of Utah battled to a 13 13 deadlock Friday with Preston leading 13 0 at halftime. Tooele scored all its points in the fourth quarter on a 60 yard Procter run and a six yard Fisher return. Preston weight 165 to Tooele 188, and the Indians head to Aston Wyoming for their next tilt.
Yale University in New Haven announced 47 freshmen under age 16 admitted this year through a Ford Foundation funded pre-induction scholarship program. Jack Eldon Wold of Preston Idaho is the sole Idaho entrant. The program, now in its second year, aims to foster liberal education before adult responsibilities. Scholars receive tuition and need-based maintenance grants, selected by grades, recommendations, and entrance exam scores.
Five men and five women from Franklin county joined Democrats in Pocatello for a district meeting. A women’s auxiliary and a young Democrats division were formed with Mrs. Ruth Shrives leading the ladies group and Garth Eames heading the youth group. County Chairman Fenton Waddoups called another meeting to finalize the organization.
The Idaho Fish and Game Department announced 200 permits for the Oneida elk hunt with 12 issued to Franklin County. Weston recipients include Ruben Buttars and others. Prescott area names listed for Weston and Oxford man Cluff M. Kendall received one permit.
