Mel Burrup opens Mel's Drug in the former Safeway building next to the Grand Theatre in Preston. The two week old store delays Grand Opening until special merchandise arrives with sales planned for Friday and Saturday. Local builders and firms join in celebrating the opening.
The 1959 census defines a farm as 10 acres or more with $5 in annual agricultural sales, with an exception for under 10 acres selling $250 worth of farm products. The old rule used 3 acres with $150 value or under three acres with $150 sold. The census starts in Idaho on October 28, with Area workers training soon and farmers asked about land use crops livestock and farming hours.
The Ogden Marine recruiting office announces a traveling recruiter will be at the local post office on Wednesday morning October 14. A recruiter from the Ogden office will stand there each Wednesday morning to inform eligible local young men about Marine service, leadership training, and 158 open jobs.
The Preston golf course shows progress with dirt for greens and leveling of fairways underway. Underground watering system materials are arriving and construction will begin next week, said Howard H. Johnson, chairman in charge. Directors invite memberships.

Idaho Department of Commerce and Development data show 1958 eastern Idaho retail sales totaling 217.8 million across 14 counties led by Bonneville 63.3 million and Bannock 59.2 million. Disposable personal income reached 121.4 million with Franklin at 11.8 million and per capita income 1513 dollars for the region.
Miss Diane Titman of Albany New York visited the Knudsen household touring a abbat toir and vendor facilities including the cooling room cutting room and lard sausage and hamburger rendering. She observed mink sheds fur bearing animals and attended a cattle sale at Cache Valley Auction Co. Titman is a BYU freshman and recent LDS church convert.
Ralph Esplin led the Preston Winder Banida Farm Bureau meeting at the Franklin county courthouse. Guest speaker Mrs. C S Bospuet urged fiscal restraint to balance the federal budget and protect dollars. Officers for the coming year were named with Ralph Esplin as county director and Mark J Gregerson as chair.
Robert B Gibson of Preston will head a crew of census takers for the 1959 census in Franklin and Bear Lake Counties. He will receive five days of training in Twin Falls on census procedures, canvassing methods, reporting, and supervision before starting field work October 28.
In a recent assembly at the LDS Business College Miss Roxie Gibson daughter of Mr and Mrs Cluff Gibson of Preston received an award for typing 56 words a minute without an error for five minutes. Gibson is a Preston High School graduate.
Judith Nash daughter of Mr and Mrs Weldon Nash is among 23 Idaho State College students who will take part in debate tournaments this year Debating coach William N Corbin announced the squad will begin with the Gem State Jamboree at TSC in October with an entry fee of 3 dollars and 24 cents.

Farmers aiming to join the 1960 conservation reserve must meet deadlines this week. Oct 9 is the request deadline for basic annual payment rates, and Oct 16 is the contract application deadline to begin participation next year under the soil bank program.
Idaho Republicans announce a party worker training school to be held in the Franklin county courthouse Preston on Monday October 12. Richard Hendricks chairs the school with Sterling Larson as state training chair. Enrollment opens 8:30 a.m. with program by Robert Ellsworth Miss Frieda Schicht and Raymond Humphreys guiding lessons on precinct potential customer outreach heritage and election laws.
The Franklin County ASC announces 1960 Conservation Reserve changes. Farmers now have until Oct 9 to begin applying and basic annual rates will be based on land productivity and value rather than 1955–59 crop yields. A tenant transfer provision allows contract with a new operator when a tenant leaves.
In Preston Junior High the student body elected two presidents after a first ever tie between Kay Crockett and Jon Jepsen. A coin toss awarded Kay the first semester presidency while Jepsen will serve in the second. Also chosen were Bob Fellows as vice president and Lynda Lee Godfrey as secretary with other posts filled by students including Dennis Sparrow and Sharlene Bodily.
USC office reports wool incentive payments to Franklin County producers total $40,976 for the 1958 59 marketing year ending August. About 115 wool and 50 lamb payment applications were filed last spring. The program pays $1.02 per hundredweight for unshorn lambs to offset wool on sold animals. It aims to boost shorn wool production and is in its fifth year.
Idaho Departments of Highways announces bids will open in Boise on Nov. 3 for two Franklin county projects on State Highway 34. One covers seeding disturbed areas around Riverdale and erosion control on Riverdale curves. A separate bid date Oct. 27 applies to a federal aid project for roadway work drainage structures and a concrete bridge on Highway 34 Riverdale south.
West Side Pirates and American Falls Beavers battled to a 6 6 tie at American Falls in the final league game. Calvin Porter scored for West Side on a fourth quarter run after a series of long passes. Gary Gunnell caught the conversion, but a backfield motion penalty denied the point. The Beavers hosted homecoming with royalty presentations as both teams showcased air and ground play.
