Top stake troop wins 10 dollars and top patrol 3 dollars. individual eagle scouts split a 5 to 2 dollar ladder with 2 dollars for other eagles. A scout diary prize and a display at J C Penney accompany the effort. Lonzo Handy notes life breaks as he discusses fatherhood gains.
The Jefferson school cafeteria reopened on Wednesday seeking vegetables from the public. Onions squash cabbage potatoes carrots beets and apples are requested to be brought to the cafeteria in the morning where they will be weighed and meal tickets issued based on quality and quantity. Citizens with large amounts may contact Miss Call to arrange disposal.
The Preston Citizen announces outside subscriptions mailed to non local residents increase to 3.00 per year starting October first due to higher newsprint and potential postage costs. Servicemen retain 2.00 per year and 1.25 per half year, matching local rates. The paper may raise local rates later if production costs rise further.
In the wake of the Third War Loan success, Franklin county launches a federation drive to raise $7200 by November 1. Phenor Edgley named chairman, with Emma Gallan as treasurer Innette Wilson secretary and Newell Hart in publicity. The fund will be distributed to seventeen national relief programs including the United Service Organization and United China Relief among others.

The party reports plentiful deer and strong hunting.
Executive officials from Prest on ward and other stake leaders attended the Latter-day Saints General Conference in Salt Lake City. Wartime travel curtailment limited attendance to ward and priesthood leaders, who carried messages to all members through the sessions and meetings.
Draft board announces no pre Pearl Harbor fathers will be called in October except volunteers. If November quotas align with recent months many pre Pearl Harbor fathers may be called. National directive to reclassify single farmers 2 C to open farm jobs for married men begins soon.
Preston Rotary members enjoyed the second World Series game at the Wednesday meeting. Tom Heath, just back from San Francisco, spoke on sugar company sales scrutiny for the army quartermaster corps. Visitors included William Shuldberg, I H Nash and A R Weston of Logan.
Lt Kenneth Smith arrived at Miami Beach Florida Sunday and telegraphed his wife and parents that he is en route home on leave after eleven months in the air war in Egypt Africa and Sicily. His wife Mrs Winona Smith learned her parents Mr and Mrs B A Spannagel in Hawaii are en route to visit, a reunion she has waited over two years for.
Proprietor Bill Davis of the O. P. Skaggs system in Preston announces 150 new cold storage lockers will be built to expand the plant’s existing locker system. With high meat storage demand from rural and town customers, over half the lockers have been signed up and interested buyers should sign up at the Skaggs meat department.
Franklin County reports total real and personal property values at 8 306 054 82 for 1943 up from 8 229 996 62 a year earlier. Most gains come from livestock and personal property, while utilities decline slightly to 3 222 306 82, with breakdowns for railroads short lines and utility firms.
Beet slicing begins Friday at the Franklin county sugar factory at 8 a.m. under general manager Tom Heath. Most assignments are made and workers urged to report promptly. About 100 Mexican workers arrived at Dayton depot to be available through the beet season, with additional positions offered via U S Employment Office in Preston and sugar company field men.
Mrs. Clara Howard reports two weekly sewing nights will support Red Cross efforts. The school provides a room and machines for sewing kits card table covers and hot water bottle covers. Local service club members have worked on the project and more help is needed. Red Cross headquarters in San Francisco requests bandages be produced after current items are completed.
Franklin county and the state publish tax levies for the coming year with a levy of 1.40 per 100 assessed value versus 1.26 in 1942. The state levy rises 13 cents and county funds show small gains from 1 to 8 cents. Community village and school district levies differ and will be added separately, with 1942 figures provided for comparison.
Five boys from Preston Future Farmers entered a three year contract with B B Burroughs of New Plymouth Idaho to raise purebred Suffolk sheep. Burroughs provides the studs and owns the ewes while the boys receive a share of lambs at weaning and work under their Ag Instructor supervision.
Franklin County boosted the Third War Loan drive well past the quota by more than ten percent, with totals likely exceeding 305000 dollars in cash sales. Lions clubs sponsored the drive and praised the general committee for its energetic support. key coordinators included T R Bowden in the business district, Rulon Dunn in Oneida stake, Weldon Nash in Franklin stake, and Mrs Paul Smith leading the ladies’ efforts.
The Pres ton Boots and Saddle club honored Luther Boyd and Clifton Wills who departed for the military this week. Twenty seven members and wives gathered at Deer Cliff Inn last Friday to toast the honorees with dancing, refreshments, and games led by Russell Crockett and Rulon Dunn.
Southeast Idaho district FFA members from Preston Malad Downey Paris and Grace met at Downey for the annual convention. LeRoy Doney of Preston was elected president with Rawlin Thomas Malad as vice president Stan Fisher Downey as secretary Joy Davis Grace named treasurer. Paris delegates to select a reporter.
Leon F Marshall named assistant manager of the J C Penney store in Preston arriving from Jerome. He has eight years with the firm including three in Jerome and five in Rexburg. He succeeds Walter Rirle who moved to Soda Springs. Mrs Marshall and two children join him in the upstairs Cal Foss residence.
Mrs. Oretta Carlson announces Carnigne Library will close for two weeks starting October 9 for cleaning and repairs. Books due during closure may be dropped through the door slot. reopening to the public is October 25.
