Beet Payments Begin as Sugar Harvest Completes

Farmers in Franklin County and Utah divisions of Amalgamated Sugar receive initial beet payments totaling 1.79 million dollars. Franklin County gets 790 thousand, Utah division 1 million. Utah includes Cache and Weber Counties. Weather has allowed good harvests since late September. sugar content holds up while tonnage runs below estimates but near normal. Factory runs three shifts with about 230 workers through early January.

Preston Readies Christmas Opening With Santa Visits

City crews begin wiring main streets for holiday lights as Preston prepares its official Christmas opening next week. Santa will visit multiple times and a choir will sing carols while merchants and the city fund new decorations including large wishing rings atop light poles. Stores stay open until 8 p.m. on November 26 and chili for visitors will be served.

Ranger Sets Yule Tree Deadline

The Pres ton District will close cutting of personal Christmas trees on November 28 due to weather and road conditions. Free permits can be bought at the District office in the Franklin County Courthouse during hours 1 to 5 p.m. on Monday Wednesday and Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday and Friday. The office closes Saturday. Major cut areas closed include Cub River Canyon and Canyon areas and the head of Williams Creek.

Cow Killed in Auto Crash Near Preston

A cow was killed Tuesday evening after being struck by a car driven by David Rex Nielsen 45 of Bountiful. The crash occurred 24 miles north of Preston on State Highway 34. The cow belonged to Wendell Forsgren. Nielsen was not injured. the car was damaged.

1965 Tax Notices Delayed and Delinquent Deadlines Set

Franklin County taxpayers will receive 1965 tax bills this weekend. Friday mailings set November 22 as the due date with delinquency after December 21. Totals include utilities and inside outside rolls. about one third of the tax is paid by each division.
