Preston High School to stage South Pacific this January

The Preston high school opera South Pacific will be performed January 11 and 12 in the high school auditorium. Directors are Carl Hoffman Lyle Shipley and Delmar Derricott with Joyce Smith as dance director. Marsha Waddoups and Rhonda Winger lead as Nellie Forbush with Emile to be played by Jim Burton and Bruce Hymas.

Translator funds halted as North Cache translator may shut

The North Cache Valley television translator could be turned off on November 30 if funds are not raised. Only half the needed amount has been collected for operation next year. The board set November 30 as the deadline and the translator will stay off the air until sufficient funds are gathered.

Six Special Awards At Scout Event In Oneida Center

The annual district banquet will present six special awards to top leaders and volunteers. About 500 attendees are expected as Heber Whiting of Logan, a Silver Beaver recipient, is honored along with other distinguished scouters. The event recognizes the top scoutmaster explorer leader cubmaster den mother guide and patrol leader for the year.

Christmas Season Events in Preston Schedule

Preston gears up for five weekends of holiday activities starting with the turning of a street decoration by Santa Claus at 5 30 p m Friday. City crews install about 1400 dollars of new decorations while stores stay open until 8 p m nightly and Christmas decorations are judged December 1. The Chamber of Commerce will sell hotdogs for five cents between 5 30 p m and 7 30 p m Friday. Fireman Frank, a Salt Lake TV personality, entertains December 2 with a free show at Preston High School gym, followed by Santa Claus giving candy to children.

Monument Dedicated To Veterans In Franklin County

A Veterans Monument was dedicated Saturday honoring all county veterans. Cenotaph inscriptions cite Nathan Van Noy Jr and Leonard Brostrum Medal of Honor citations. Howard Johnson led the service with the Preston cemetery board. Preston Junior High Band provided music.

Group Seeks Consolidation of County Schools

The Caribou County joint school district study committee Tuesday recommended an immediate election on consolidating Grace Bancroft and Soda Springs schools. It also urged a bond issue if consolidation wins approval to fund a new county high school in the Soda Springs area.

Preston Chamber Nominating Committee Sets Board Candidates

The Preston Chamber of Commerce nominating committee has a tentative list for the board of directors. President Eldon Crockett says interested parties may add names by November 18. Five members will be elected and ballots mailed to members around November 21.

Beet Checks Mailed To Growers

Sugarbeet payments totaling about 15 million dollars were sent to roughly 3,000 growers across three states. In Utah’s Lewis plant area the rate was 60 a ton, about 75 cents higher than last year, with initial distributions ranging from 9.90 to 11.25 per ton in Idaho districts and at 11.25 for Twin Falls and Mini-Cassia. Final settlements for 1966 completed two weeks earlier.

County Residents Face One Million Dollar Tax Bills

Franklin county residents will receive tax notices totaling 1 032 000 with 4939 bills mailed by the county treasurer for real property utilities and some personal taxes. Notices run from November 27 to December 20 with penalties for late payment and options to pay now or in two installments. The Utah Power Tint Light Co faces the largest bill at 209 701 87 dollars followed by Union Pacific Railroad 79 837 96 dollars and Mountain States Telephone 27 500 20 dollars.

Preston High school to stage three one act plays tonight

The Preston High School speech classes present three one act plays in the auditorium directed by Delmar Derricott with student directors Vicki Evans Kim Coburn and Charlie Tate. One drama will go to the Fifth District One Act Play Festival at Montpelier High School on Saturday. Tickets cost 50 cents for adults 25 cents for students with school cards admitted free for Eastside and West Side students.

Farm Bureau Names Leaders in Franklin County

Marlow C. Woodward, an egg producer, was named president of the Franklin County Farm Bureau at the annual banquet. He succeeds Stanton M. Hawkes. New officers include Robert O. Mciverdale, Conrad Christensen, Ariel W. Meek, and Mrs. Meek and Mrs. Delbert Jo Rawlings as assistants. Speaker George W. Hansen was introduced by Richard Hendricks.
