Harvest of 1957 beets completed by November in a plant that started Oct 7. Delivery total reached 75 000 tons, largest since 1943. Beets processed into sugar by 200 workers, with 8 7500 tons coal and 4 000 tons lime rock used. Immediate payments include 1 825,000 for 1957 beets and 1.30 per ton for 1956 beets, plus 2.41 per ton benefit from processing tax. Final payments on 1957 beets next year after sugar sales.
The Franklin County Fish and Game Association says vandals damaged four public toilets at Twin Lakes after volunteers had built and painted them. A $50 reward is offered for information leading to arrest and conviction. The group hosts the Idaho Wildlife Federation fifth district meeting at the Elks lodge with about 80 attendees.
A Preston column mourns Jed Lewis who died Wednesday morning after years with a heart condition. The piece recalls his cheerful help to townspeople, and notes his wife Mattie and daughter Bonnie, plus Jed’s longtime friendship and hospitality.
The 1957 Franklin County grassman awards were presented at the harvest banquet by the Preston Chamber of Commerce Agricultural Committee and the Preston American Legion post. Recipients were Farrell Beckstead of Whitney for livestock program and Jack Moser of Dayton for diversified farming.
Tuesday ballots were mailed to about 2000 eligible voters by the county agricultural stabilization and conservation committee. Voters will choose five of ten nominees on their ballot and return it to the ASC office by November 22. The section notes that the nominees with the highest votes in each community will advance.
Franklin County Canning Center will close Friday November 22 after a busy year. It will operate November 20 to 22 for canning apples puddings pork and beans and meats. The season totals 117000 cans of produce. The center plans a two day January reopening for animals ready to can, with appointments at 212 W.
A mixed choir and band from Preston and Pocatello high schools performed under J P Manning and Bert Christensen with Lyle Shipley directing. The Preston High School fall concert will be held next Wednesday at 8 15 p m in the auditorium with free admission and public invites. The program included choir and orchestra pieces and a farewell testimonial for Garry Ace Beckstead ahead of his LDS mission to the western states with headquarters in Denver and a mission home in Salt Lake City.
A recruiting office call from Pocatello yesterday states any Army recruiter will be at the post office next Wednesday from 2 to 6 p m to interview interested young men.
Mrs Lincoln W Foster and Mrs ML Reeves, co commanders of Franklin county American Cancer Society, attended the Idaho division statewide leadership conference in Boise on Nov 8 and 9. Dr C Re Cutler district medical director flew in for the annual board of directors meeting, returning that night.
A Halloween prank removing stop signs at a church intersection caused a collision near the Fairview stores Sunday about 10 a.m. Mrs Phillips of Preston suffered severe injuries. Jerald Dewey driver of the second car and Keith Hansen sustained minor injuries. Property damage totaled about 700 dollars.
Major General John Wasi ta ho adjutant general today commended five Idaho National Guard units for net gains during fiscal year 1957. First Lt Gordon Merrill led the state’s Army guard with a 33 man gain. Other units all posted gains over 20 men including Company B 116th armored cavalry Nampa Capt Jack R Clem ent, 129th Engineer Company Driges Capt John O Sessions, Company A 882nd Engineer Battalion Bonners Ferry Capt Forrest A Potter, and Battery C 148th armored field artillery battalion Lewiston Capt Glen R White. Twenty other units showed gains through June 30 this year.
Vern W. McFarland of Franklin has been granted exclusive use of the Dixie-Beach prefix for his Holstein Friesian cattle. The Holstein-Friesian Association of America will record the prefix. Over 1170 prefixes were reserved for breeders in 1956.
