Voting in mayoral race names Bell Fackrell Burton

The ballot lists mayoral candidates Wayne Bell Lynn Fackrell and Legrand Burton as the field for the upcoming election. Voters will choose the next city leader among these contenders.

Wayne Bell 48 co publisher of The Citizen is elected mayor defeating Lynn Fackrell 369 and Legrand Burton 314 in a three way race. Don Elwell 634 and Kimber Christensen 579 win as new councilmen joining Clair Rosen 476 Mike Lower 446 Reed McEntire 230 Bill Hollingsworth 76 with 1 247 voters 82 percent turnout. Bell to succeed Lyle Shipley with Elwell and Christensen as council picks.

Preston district to hold parent teacher conferences Monday

Preston School District schedules Monday conferences on a staggered basis across high middle and elementary schools. Principals urge fathers take time off work to attend. Hours run 7 am to 4 pm high, 8 am to 5 pm middle, 9 am to 6 pm elementary with staggered lunch breaks. Report cards available only for pickup by parents. Attendees urged to reach 100 percent.

Farmers push to back a nationwide strike in 1978

Local informants report a planned national strike by American Farmers set for December 14 to demand 100 percent parity for all agricultural products. The push includes a regional rally in Burley and cites a Moscow rally with about 80 farmers as momentum.

State Highway 34 abandonment protested at public hearing

About a dozen Franklin County residents attended a State Highway Department hearing to oppose abandoning 6.4 miles of State Highway 34 from the Utah line to Preston. Local officials and business leaders argued the route supports Preston’s economy and Utah-linked traffic. opponents cited tax costs and substandard conditions. Written testimony was due to the state Transportation Board by today for the November hearings in Boise.

Franklin voters approve revenue bond and reelect councilmen

Franklin voters approved a 132,500 revenue bond for water system improvements by 172 to 15 and re elected incumbents James Kirkbride and Brenton Atkinson with 102 and 100 votes. Ronald Wilkinson and Darren Hatch trailed with 93 and 80 votes. The project will be matched with a 127,500 grant from the Farmers Home Administration for a new well reservoir and line improvements.
