Franklin county backs the Republican ticket while national results show Truman gains. Dewey wins county votes overall, with key races for sheriff, assessor, and state representatives tight but Republican incumbents Hart Funk and Evans prevail alongside several county offices.
The Franklin County Flower and Garden Club will hold its third annual banquet at the Franklin stakehouse on November 17 at 9 30 pm. A complete turkey dinner will be served and a program will be presented with prizes for many people. Members and others interested in this entertainment are invited to attend.
J P Robinson manager of the Preston J C Penney store in Freedom Wyoming died Monday in Afton hospital aged 66 after becoming ill Sunday. He was born in Richmond and is survived by four sons and two daughters.
An 11 year old boy Billy Hall was badly wounded in a hunting accident when a 12 gauge shotgun carried by his brother Ralph 13 discharged accidentally. The boy was treated at a local hospital and remained in critical condition. Ray Viola accompanied the boys and helped after the incident on the southern city outskirts.
Five local businesses were entered and ransacked during Friday night. Prowlers damaged windows and safes at six sites including Franklin County Grain Growers Utah Poultry and David E Davis company but failed to reach contents. Johnson blacksmith shop and Union Pacific tool house were also opened and broken into.
The Franklin County Farm Bureau will hold its annual meeting and election Wednesday, November 10 at the Franklin stake house with a banquet. Seven district directors will be chosen from candidates in each district, and the ladies' association will also elect five members from a list of nominees.
Thirty Franklin county scouts were honored at the court of honor held Tuesday October 26 in the Preston fourth ward. Special recognition went to new scouts Larry Dahle Blaine Priestley of troop 52 Linrose Robbie White David Smith Eldon Schwartz Dennis Jessop of troop 40 Dayton. At the event Tommy Lamoreaux Max Jensen of troop 33 were promoted to first class scouts and Boyd Mitton of troop 37 became a life scout. Merit badges were earned by numerous scouts from troops 37 38 and others with names including Boyd Mitton Kent Benson Rene Winward Arlo Howell Dennis Moser Conan Foster Glen Tanner Orval C Benson Wayne Swainston Paul Sharp Rodrey Gilbert Garth Bodily Floyd Jensen William Whittle Richard Gailey Brent Wilson Jay T Cole and Ewen Griffeth Mark Porter Eugene Long Ronnie
County Superintendent Mark Hart criticized a Franklin county article for omitting the word yes in two amendments. The Citizen later notes the error and confirms both amendments carried, while Hart remains magnanimous despite the setback.
Armistice Day closes Preston business houses for the day. The Citizen plans a special edition for next week to promote the pre Christmas open house event sponsored by Preston merchants on Friday and Saturday Nov 12 and 13. Correspondents are urged to mail or bring in copy earlier than usual to avoid late news.
Charles Alexander 59 of Salt Lake City was arrested Saturday night by police chief Durwood Hull after attempting to pass a fraudulent check at a local business. He was charged with forgery Monday before city judge P. L. Allred and is held in jail.
Funeral services were held for 16 year old Leland Williams Call of Clifton after he was killed while driving a Farmall A tractor on the Call farm. Sheriff reports say the youth jumped down to release gears from a manure spreader when the tractor veered toward an irrigation ditch and crushed him under the right rear wheel.
Lincoln A. Orme announces the Franklin County canning center will close on November 10. The center processed over 80 000 cans this season, a record, with staff praised for faithful service and improvements making work easier. Residents are urged to finish canning by the closing date.
Preston Tigers travel to Filer for a close Friday tilt. Filer edges Preston 14 12 as Indians outgain locals 245 to 186 and total yardage 175 each for passes. Scoring drives include Herd on a 15 yard pass from Doney and McClun 20 yard run for Preston. Blass three yard run and Flennigan 20 yard scamper for Filer.
Mrs Evelyn B Shum way of Idaho Falls writes that Enclosed is $3 to renew her subscription to THE CITIZEN and she looks forward to receiving a weekly issue without missing one.
Mrs. George Hodges, 67, was struck while crossing First South near State Street around 6 30 p m Saturday evening. She suffers a compound fracture of the right ankle plus minor cuts and bruises and was taken to the hospital after treatment at the scene by Dr Smith. The driver was Lloyd M Beckstead Jr. Police report says she stepped back into the path of an approaching car after becoming alarmed by a vehicle coming from the west.
The Franklin stake conference led by President Henry H. Rawlings stressed daily prayer and gospel service. Speakers urged faith from Joseph Smith to Abraham Lincoln, duty, and service to others, with Merrill and Merrill’s tale of faith amid danger. Music and sermons highlighted missionary work and living the gospel.
Jaycees’ Halloween event drew nearly 700 children and their parents to the city, with a parade from Central School to the high school auditorium. Prizes for costumes and contests were provided by Preston merchants, and police aided with a dedicated escort to ensure safety amid Saturday night traffic.
Cecelia Winward 66 wife of Abraham Winward died Wednesday at a daughter’s home in Blackfoot. The Whitney chapel will hold services Saturday at 1 pm. A Preston and Whitney resident for years she had been ill five years. Born February 16 1382 in Hyde Park Utah to Peter Hansen and Cecela Thompson Hansen she moved to Preston at 12. She married in the Logan LDS temple June 11 1902. She served as Whitney ward relief society president black teacher Sunday school worker and on the Franklin stake YWMA board. She is survived by six children Grace Anderson Ida Roberts and Morris plus others.
Riverdale workers used a Farm Hand machine instead of scaffolding to repaint the ward chapel exterior. Ariel Meek operated the lift mechanism, completing the job in six hours. The project cut years of prior scaffold setup, reducing effort from about 160 hours. Assistants included Efred Smith Roy Smith Bishop Forsgren Ray Barrington and Roy Osen.
