Two Now Safe One Survivor Lenard Lewis Returns
Lenard Lewis a gunners mate second class from Preston arrived in San Francisco after surviving the USS Dickerson sinking near Okinawa. He has a long Navy service from January 1942, training in San Francisco and Norfolk, convoy duty, plus Pacific amphibious actions at Wake, Guadalcanal, Saipan, Guam. He married Gladys Salem of Oakland upon arrival. Elden Larsen is reported safe in France after liberation from Germany. Lt Douglas Hadley, missing since March 22, is en route home, having served since 1943 with armored units in France and Germany, now in New York awaiting homecoming.

Women Contribute Vast Sewing Hours for Red Cross Quota
Nearly 4500 hours of work by county women helped complete the spring knitting and sewing quota for the Red Cross. A Preston shipment included 20 layettes, 27 bath robes, 133 pajamas, 30 hospital jackets, and hundreds of bags and kits. Special thanks were given to Harley Greaves and Ralph Strub for heavy packing and lifting.

Day completes at Preston High School featured numerous awards and scholarships. Carol Greaves earned the Marcell Bird Scholarship for outstanding science, Dallas Keller won $25,000 college tuition with June Tanner as alternate, BYU scholarship went to Ben Rawlings with Edris Cafferty as alternate, and Joyce Keller along with Reetts Hawkes received Danforth Foundation books on a scholarship basis. Elizabeth Condie won Reader's Digest for top scholastic average. Jean Albano had perfect four-year attendance and a candy prize from Superintendent Simmons. School groups won in the assembly contest. various students earned music, dramatics, publications, and athletic honors across bands, orchestra, vocal, home economics, and sports programs.

Mrs H J Maughan president of the Idaho Congress of Parents and Teachers is invited to Moscow June 24 to explain the new vocational law that funds about 25000 dollars. State education officials will attend and seek guidance on fund administration. She will also award the Anna Hayes Memorial Scholarship to the school’s top student funded by donor contributions.

Harold Benson Home on Thirty Day Leave From Overseas Duty
Harold E Benson Chief Radio and Radar Technician returned home on a 30 day leave after two years nine months overseas. He will attend two months of schooling at Treasure Island before reassignment to duty in San Francisco. He has served since 1942 with a base at Midway for about eighteen months and spoke at a Sacrament meeting describing life below the ocean surface. Twin sons were born May 23 to Mr and Mrs Milford Law of Smithfield. Mrs Law formerly Edith Lowe of Franklin. The family includes four daughters and one other son.

Red Cross appoints officers and outlines annual finances
Inette Wilson was re appointed chairman of the Franklin county Red Cross chapter at the annual meeting. Marlow Funk Harvey Bickmore and Beth Kirwan named officers. The year’s receipts totaled 10409.88 with 1374.92 cash on hand June 1 1944. Disbursements reached 7759.06 and 2650.62 remained. A life saving course is to be offered at Como Springs starting June 14 and needs an instructor.

Silver Star Awarded Daring Pilot For Attack
Ensign Walter Roger Walker earned the Silver Star for a daring carrier attack on an enemy heavy cruiser during a battle off an island on October 25, 1944. Despite heavy anti aircraft fire his plane scored a direct hit, saved his group, and contributed to the ship's destruction. He returned to the United States on a 30 day furlough and was reassigned to Camp Edwards Mississippi. Mrs Erma Reeder Walker joins him at Camp Edwards. his parents reside in Delta Utah.
