Draft ruling affects many Franklin county men
Approximately 400 men in Franklin county aged 30 to 37 are affected by a Washington issued draft ruling deferring those over 30 in useful jobs. Idaho local boards were told to postpone induction of men over 30 and review all 1-A registrants above 30 per the national directive. County classifications show 2A and 2B groups among 30 to 38 year olds, with 239 men over 30 in 2C. About 20 percent of registrants have been found physically or mentally unfit.

Death of Mrs. Nellie Lomax Roe
Mrs Nellie Lomax Roe former publisher Wilts wife of Watlin Roe died Thursday morning at her daughter’s Logan home after a stroke. Born May 26 1865 in Derbyshire England she moved to the United States circa 1882 married March 6 1889 in Logan temple. Survived by two children J Lewis Roe Camp Cooke Lompac California and Mrs Gladys Hansen Logan plus 13 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral at Lindquist Mortuary Logan Monday 11 am.

Franklin county was well represented at the Black and White show in Richmond Utah last week. Eugene OliVesson’s stallion won first in the 2-year old stallion class and other local entries took top honors in pleasure horse judging and American Saddle events. Wright’s heavy weight pulling team lost to the Lewis Brothers. Henry Drury’s bull placed fourth in calf and third in two year olds, with his calf winning the purebred class in the three years and under.

Franklin county voters push the Seventh War Loan drive with about $32,000 in bonds sold toward a $346,000 quota. Ward queen candidates must submit names and photos by June 1 for engraving ahead of Idaho Day June 15. The queen will be chosen by per capita bonds sold across the county with Abe White and Ben Johnson leading Idaho Day events and a featured softball game against the Aubach Footprinters.

Two Wounded On Okinawa Reported From Front
Mr and Mrs Orlando Hampton learn their son Pfc Devon Hampton was wounded in Okinawa and would move to a general hospital for rest and treatment. His brother Cpl Rex Hampton is also serving nearby and a sister lives in Fairview. Pfc Max Jensen, also on Okinawa, was wounded in action with left foot injuries while training in California and Hawaii before arrival. The Red Cross is assisting, providing comforts and even sweaters knitted at home.

One hundred thirty four seniors of Preston High School will receive diplomas at the twenty third graduation program Friday evening at 8 30 in the auditorium. Supt Harland Simmons has announced the program with A L Merrill of Pocatello delivering the address. The program includes processional selections and speeches by senior leaders, musical numbers, and the presentation of diplomas and class gift.

More Mexican Nationals Arrive for Franklin County Labor Camp
One hundred Mexican nationals were assigned to Franklin county this week. Ninety were loaned to the Ogden area until needed locally. ten joined the local camp. The total men available to farmers at the labor camp now stands at sixty.

Christopher R. Bodily, 80, prominent farmer of Fairview and Lewiston areas, died Wednesday at Cache Valley Hospital in Logan. Born June 16, 1884, he married Blanche Matkin in January. Pre-School Clinic Set For Monday May 28
A pre-school clinic will be conducted Monday May 28 at the Central school house under supervision of the Parent-Teacher officers. All parents with children entering school for the first time next fall should have them examined and immunized. Clinic runs 9 a.m. to 12 noon with two doctors and one dentist. Parents should bring a towel for each child and bring birth certificates or certificates of blessing as eligibility is six by September 30.
Eight District Schools Vote On Consolidation Plan June 22
Eight school districts in Franklin and Bannock counties plan to vote on consolidation into Joint Independent District No 1 on June 22 to open a single, efficiently administered plant. If approved, the new district would cover about 143 square miles with an assessed valuation of 2.5 million dollars and around 600 students. Districts listed include Weston Rural High No 1, Silver Star Common No 17, Cedarville No 14, Roosevelt No 13, Weston No 10, Oxford No 2 in Bannock, Dayton Independent No 12, and Clifton Independent No 11.

Vaccination drive covers 1874 heifers in county program
