Local Jaycees Promote Teen Driving Contest With Car Loans

The Jaycees invite teens to sign up by tomorrow at Dan's Barber Shop for a driving event. Four local dealers donate cars for prizes, and a written test is Saturday at the courthouse from 9 a.m. to noon. Top two drivers go to Burley on June 10 for the state road-e-o with scholarships and a chance at a Washington, D. C. trip and national awards.

Enlistments and Releases Reported by Local Office

The selective service office lists two men released from service and one enlistment. Darryl Glenn Richardson of Preston enlisted in the navy on April 17. Norman Petterberg, formerly of Preston, was released from the navy April 17 and received the national defense Korean service and United Nations medals. Kay Ward Fellows of Preston was released from the army April 15 with the national defense service medal.

Sunday Morning Fire Destroys Two Buildings

Early Sunday at 2 30 a fire broke out on the Murray Mortensen farm at 545 West Second North. The shed used as a barn burned with tools and spread to a chicken coop, both structures reported as a total loss. The fire’s origin was undetermined.

Cache Valley Baseball Assn Reorganizes To Launch 1956 Season

Henry Hodges of Lewiston Utah is new president of the Cache Valley Baseball Assn which reorganized recently and plans the 1956 season. Vernon Merrill Trenton serves as vice president Ferrell Karren Smithfield as secretary. Outgoing officers include Marcell Pitcher Cornish Val Rigby Lewiston and Perry Phillips Dayton. The league starts this Saturday with 10 teams and aims to align Preston with the association rather than the Utah Idaho league. Most games will be free to the public.

Scout Camporee Opens Friday at Mink Creek Site

The Frank lin county district prepares for the annual camporee with over 35 patrols expected. Check-in Friday 4:30 to 6:30 p m at Mink Creek ball park, followed by an evening campfire directed by YMMIA superintendencies Andrew Shumway and Lynn Nelson. Saturday features campsite judging and events assessing neatness, organization, food handling, gear, and sanitation.

Vocal Conness Won Last Night By Miss Affleck

Connie Jean Affleck daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert C Affleck of Preston last night won the annual vocal contest for Preston High School the Baugh cup. Sophomore contestant Miss Affleck was judged by Ned Stocks of Minidoka High School Rupert a 1941 Worley cup winner. Honorable mention went to Ronald Johnson Louise Johnson Bonnie Bogen and Darrell Jepsen.

Preston High Students Shine at Poetry Festival

Preston High students earned high ratings at the annual poetry festival with three seniors, Anna Marie Poulsen, Nancy Greaves and Rodger Hawkes, receiving superior ratings and certificates from USAC in two rounds. Others, Lenore Rasmussen, Deanne Perry and Laura Jean Rasmussen, also earned very good ratings. a luncheon, tea, and a Shakespeare play accompanied the event. Fred Nelson, Preston High speech instructor, attended the festival and a book of poetry was awarded to the high school for participation.

Preston Runner Misses Record After BYU Meet Error

Preston High standout Gary Griffeth failed to receive a record for his mile win at the BYU invitational in Provo due to reporting error. The meet credited 4377 while a historic 436 stood for Eldred Elder High School in 1924 at the BYU relays.

Utah Power Lineman Burned by Hot Wire

H. C. Cy Herd of Utah Power and Light was severely burned yesterday after contact with a live wire while working on an electric pole at Franklin. The 11:40 a.m. accident sent current from his left foot to his right, injuring both legs. Doctors expect the full extent of injuries to take several days to determine, though he remained conscious.

Salt Lake Chamber to Visit Preston for May 9 Breakfast

Salt Lake City chamber members will tour Preston as part of the annual goodwill visit. A 7.30 a.m. breakfast at the courthouse will be followed by a program. The Preston school band will debut in new uniforms during a welcoming parade.

Preston High School Fine A Cappella Choir Captures First Rating

Preston High School sent four busloads of students to the state music festival in Boise last Thursday and Friday. The Preston A Cappella Choir, 76 voices, earned first division rating, as did the accompanying glee club. The boys chorus of 56 voices earned second rating, with other participants also receiving high marks. Choir director Tuvie Shipley earned a first rating for nine years of work.

Local High School Artists Win Prizes in Art Exhibit

In the Preston High School exhibit held last Wednesday, freshman Carvel Rust won first place and a wrist watch. Second prize went to Jack Scholes who received a pen and pencil set. Honorable mentions went to Lee Ann Carlson Verley Moosman Laura Rasmussen Leonard Davis Steven Johnson and Parley Smart among 40 participants.
