Parity formula debate reshapes farm price yardstick
Washington moves to revise the farm parity formula with Benson’s recommendation to shift base years from 1910-14 to 1947-56. The change would lower parity for wheat corn and milk, likely shrinking price support loans by up to 100 million dollars annually and altering farmers purchasing power. Additional proposals tie parity to farm costs or to equalizing farmer incomes with non farm workers.
