Preston Lions club announces a community improvement contest with a first prize of 50 dollars and a second prize of 25 dollars for essays or plans to improve the city. Entries due by March 23 at the Preston Clinic. winners announced March 27.
Returning Monday from Boise where they met with 20 other state chambers of commerce groups Reid Bosworth president of the Preston chamber Rulon Dunn secretary Philip West and County Commissioner Albert Moser a local C of C director. The meeting aimed to present a proposal to state senators and representatives and voice objections to a sales tax.
The Gem Valley Stockmen association held its annual meeting Monday in Thatcher to elect officers for 1957 and plan grazing of cattle on the national forest allotment next summer. Leon Swensen was named president and other officers include William G. Condie secretary treasurer Ellis Wright Roe Bennett and Dean Panter as board members. Plans to improve water and drift fences were discussed to better distribute cattle on the allotment with cooperation from the forest service. Cache National Forest officers Orval E. Winkler and Thomas Levy attended to report on range conditions and grazing adjustments to benefit users.
Tomorrow is the final date to sign or adjust 1957 wheat acreage reserve agreements. Farmers must changes only through the signup period and after March 8 changes are limited to error corrections or redesignation of acreage. If more acres can be added, farmers will receive written notice after March 8.
Jesse W. Spafford of American Fork Utah was named president of the Utah Poultry and Farmers Co operative at the 34th annual meeting. The 10 000 member farm cooperative plans for a stronger 1957 with bigger operations and larger flocks amid possible turkey production cuts. Utah coop reported about 20 million dollars in sales across eggs poultry turkeys feeds and supplies last year.
Sergeant Stanley J. Brostrom of MAAG Taiwan greeted the U S Navy ship Private Leonard C. Brostrom as it moored at Pier 17 in Keelung Harbor. The ship honors his late brother Leonard C. Brostrom, a 1944 infantry Medal of Honor recipient who died in action. Captain Paul R. Merlin Jr. welcomed the sergeant aboard the heavy lift vessel christened in 1949 by the hero’s father.
Max Poulter of Jerome arrives to direct The Preston Citizen subscription contest. He recalls a 1953 Preston run and notes Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Arizona contests. He comes well recommended by the Idaho State Press Assn and promises friendly treatment for participating youngsters.
The University of Scouting sponsored by Cache Valley Council runs March 27 to April 1 at Utah State Agricultural College venues. It offers electives in fly tying Indian lore signaling and more with classes for 45 minutes each night. Wives and mothers have a special open class and information bulletins go to leaders. Leo Petterborg of Boise and Denzil Petterborg of Salt Lake City visited Gre day with their mother Mrs Emil Petterborg who is recovering from surgery.
Dr. John Furbay, Yale PhD and longtime TWA aviation official, is billed as the world’s most traveled man. He will address the Pres ton Knight and Fork club at the Franklin County Courthouse Friday night March 15 at 7:30.
Earl Nelson of Modern Farm Equipment Co announces the allis-chalmers community day on Friday March 15 starting at 1 p m at 51 West Oneida St The event features motion pictures deer prizes refreshments and new machinery displays including Farm hand and New Idea equipment plus Allis-Chalmers products for farmers and families.
Hansen Glass and Paint now operated by Rulon Owen and Royce Fuhriman offers free interior decorating guidance to Preston residents. Mrs. Hardy of Fuller Paint Co. Ogden, an experienced decorator, will visit Preston once or twice monthly to advise on decor problems with no charge or obligation.
Franklin county youngsters aged 10 to 15 are invited to enter a subscription contest starting March 9 and ending March 30. Eight grand prizes include a 17 inch Zenith television set a Schwinn bicycle two Bulova wrist watches a Zenith record player and a Zenith radio plus cash prizes for non winners. Districts 1 2 3 cover Preston rural areas and western towns. Contest details and entry coupon appear in the current issue with instructions from campaign manager Max Poulter.
The Sunbonnet Girl operetta at Preston Junior High will be staged in the high school auditorium on Friday March 15. Directed by Mervin Sharp the show follows Susan the orphan girl as a singing contest winner in a village setting with 180 students in chorus and dance numbers.
Stanton S Thompson of the Pocatello social security office urged self employed claimants to bring a copy of their 1956 federal tax returns including Schedule F or C to file claims. He advised including proof of tax payment and suggested bringing an extra copy to keep. The representative will be in Preston March 13 from 10 30 a m to noon at the county courthouse district courtroom.
Thayne K Hodges of Company B 746th Armored Infantry Battalion earned a badge for pistol marksmanship. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Dick Hodges of Preston. Family operated farms comprise about 97 percent of all farms in the United States.
L. M. Doney, secretary of the Utah Idaho Canning Crops Assn, announced this week that contracts between growers and processors have been agreed upon. Prices and services remain the same as last year.
