Franklin county suffered three deaths this week in the war, bringing the month total to five and marking the largest mortal loss. Jared Larson died at sea as a merchant mariner, Capt. Wallace Collins was killed in Holland, and Woodrow Dunkley, a prisoner of war, perished when a prison ship was torpedoed near Mindanao.

Weston high school basketball, coached by Lyle Porter, competes in the Fifth district Class B tournament at Soda Springs March 1 2 3. Last Respects Paid Youth Who Gave Life
Memorial services were held for Lieutenant Richard M. Merrill at the First Ward chapel on Sunday. Bishop Ernest Eberhard led the service with brief life sketches and praise for the outstanding flier who died October 17 over Vienna Austria. Preludes by Mrs. Marcell Bird and congregational singing by the Preston Melodians accompanied by Mrs. Helen Bunker framed the service. Superintendent Harland Simmons recalled Merrill as an active student and leader in high school activities.

War Food Administration Eyes Franklin County Beet Quota
Members of the War Food Administration visited Preston this week to urge Franklin county farmers to meet a 6800 acre beet quota. Lead by Quince Rice the group stressed sugar supply urgency and the need for labor to harvest the crop. The army will supply 250 prisoners and may deploy other armed forces if needed to complete harvest. 175 Mexican nationals are also slated for the county this year. Jared Lewis of the Franklin County Sugar Company expressed optimism about this year’s labor prospects, predicting a strong result since the war began.
