Sergeant Wendell N. Fife, 27, the first local recipient discharged under the War Department point system, earned the Silver Star for gallantry in action in Germany on March 2, 1945. A telegram conveyed Mrs. Florence Martin that her son Pfc. Glenn W. Jabbs was seriously wounded on May 23 at Okinawa, the first official word she received after hospital briefings. Pfc. Rex Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred H. Anderson of Cleveland, was also wounded in Okinawa and will be sent to an American hospital for further care.
