Franklin Idaho planned Pioneer Day events for Friday to mark the 109th birthday of the first permanent white settler. Activities included flag raising on Mt Smart at dawn and a Dutch oven chicken dinner in the city park, with leaders Marlowe Woodward and staff overseeing arrangements and relic displays open most of the day.
A Franklin county survey shows a two week vacation for two costs about 574 dollars with daily car budgets near 41 dollars. Meals lodging gas tips and fixed costs drive total annual car expenses to roughly 1 550 dollars per household based on 10 000 miles. Local drivers spend about 6 665 000 dollars yearly on ownership and operation while area service stations record 979 000 dollars in 1968.
The July 4th holiday prompts the Citizen to publish one day earlier with all news and ads moved up. Mailings will also occur a day early to align with the adjusted schedule.
The Preston Night Rodeo announces a queen contest for women aged 16 to 25 with no prior titleholders. Regional eligibility spans from Hyrum South to McCammon North Tremonton and Malad West to Montpelier East. Judging splits 75 percent horsemanship and 25 percent horse handling. Signups close at 6 p m July 18 1963. The queen contest occurs July 99 1969 at 8 30 p m in the Preston Night Rodeo Arena.
U S Savings Bond sales jumped in Franklin county in May reaching 15 702 dollars, nearly half of the 1969 year to date total of 32 672 dollars. Caribou county sold 4 329 dollars in May, bringing its year total to 25 034 dollars. Franklin has reached 54.5 percent of its 1969 quota versus 33.4 percent for Caribou.
The high school band begins Monday at 7 30 a m with the night band at 8 30 a m and beginning students at 9 30 a m James Cox will be in charge of the band program.
The Preston City council accepted an audit report by Cleo Swenson, a local CPA, who urged improvements to the city office accounting system. Swenson noted funds in the red mainly as carryover from before 1963 and recommended formal written reforms. Dennis Winward, a Pocatello CPA, advised changes and warned that a council manager form of government would reduce the council’s control for a city of Preston’s size.
Seven drivers from Caribou and Franklin counties faced license suspensions by Idaho authorities. In Caribou county Audray P. Jacobson Grace and Donald E. Pierce Soda Springs had licenses suspended for driving under the influence. Stanley R. Cole Conda and Paul Garner Soda Springs saw suspensions for reckless driving, while Michael P Norris Soda Springs faced a suspension for accumulation of points. In Franklin county Chee Sam Weston was suspended for DUI and Ricky Lloyd had a license suspended.
The final driver education session begins July 3 with signups for students aged 14 and older. Instructors say interested youths should gather in the high school auditorium at 1 p.m. for the start of the course.
Lewiston July 4 celebration plans on sale with events led by Verl B Hendricks as general chairman. The program includes flag raising at 6 am, breakfast, parade at 9 30, Pony League baseball, rodeo and races, Little League game, girls softball and city council, fireworks at 9 30, and a square dance on the lawn. Committees emphasize keeping ticket prices affordable for families.
Eunice Joey of Delcon Arizona, 42, died in a one car crash near Sixth South and State Street Saturday. Russell Begay, 22, of Pinon Arizona, was critically injured and hospitalized. Driver oanobey lost control after swerving to avoid hay bales on a slick road. the 1958 car totaled.
Law enforcement warns that leaving items from a spill on roadways is a misdemeanor. The responsible hauler faces fines up to $300 and must clear all fallen loads.
Petitions for forming a television translator district must be signed by July 1 per Burton Martin, president of the Franklin County television organization. Petitions are available in Brieston area neighborhoods with signers including Earl Johnson, Bill Hansen, Richard Bowman, Eldon Crockett, Burt Martin, Keith Christiansen, Royce Fuhriman, LaRue Stone, Jesper Rasmussen, Kenneth Roberts, Wayne Bell, Chris Hansen, Robert Acock, Bill Weber, Leo Gedds, Ross Rasmussen, Clyde Checketts, Nate Hale, Joe Moser, Willard Warner, Howard Johnson, Dorothy Clayson, Gene Chatterton, Stan Evans, Robert Geddes, Marion Bennett, Earl Kirkbride, Wynn Nelson, Arnold Sant, Rulon Owen, Jack Allred.
Cliff Jewell of Montpelier receives a deed for land to build a new post office. Doug Campbell motioned, Fred VanVleet seconded. Zoning permits issued to Mr Jewell for the post office, Dell Maughan for a home, Verl Neeley for a tool shed. Attendees included Lavar Taylor Henry Marinsen Willis Rowsell and Fred VanVleet.
A meeting for all parents with children entering kindergarten is scheduled. It will be held July 3 at 9 a.m. in the West Side High School library to discuss details of kindergarten start.
