A fragmented notice invites children to join a contest with cash and merchandise prizes. Readers are urged to obtain entry coupons, have a parent sign, and submit to The Citizen contest department for a chance at top awards including a wrist watch and substantial cash.
A Franklin County 4-H club group including members and a leader will leave Union Pennsylvania for the Idaho short course held for older 4-H members. The trip lists many sponsors and participants such as 213 years old and older. The group will return to Preston on June 16.
Glen L Oliverson city recreation supervisor announced the swimming program will be delayed this summer due to work at the high school. He hopes the program may start around July 1 with ample notice for prospective registrants.
The 15th annual convention of the Jerome County probate association was held in Preston on June 2 3 4. Final reports praised the special committees for the membership drive and the 1956 convention site was announced. Judge W Merrill and the county commission board received recognition for outstanding programs. Elda Carlson's chorus was commended for entertainment Friday evening and Ruth Schnurle of Fremont was noted as secretary.
Norman G. Mickelson former Franklin County deputy sheriff resigned from the Idaho state patrol effective May 13. A Dayton native he served under Elias Han sen for 716 months and recently joined General Electric security in Idaho Falls after leaving the patrol. He is married to Zora Maeser of Logan and has one child.
The annual Franklin celebration in Idaho opens Tuesday at 2 pm with a girls softball game between Lewiston and Franklin. A 6:30 pm men’s softball match Logan All Stars versus Bill’s Texaco, then professional wrestling at 8 pm featuring Dave Reynolds and Bill Melby. The day ends with plans for a parade Wednesday morning and a patriotic program.
The Preston City softball league started play with Teague and Downey defeating Franklin and Downey 116 to 10. Bill’s Texaco beat Godfrey 14 to 3. Franklin edged Downey 116 to 10. Lewiston and Phillips set games for 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. with other matches announced.
City invites boys ages 13 to 17 to join American Legion baseball and practice at the local park. Monday and Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. open to all eligible players. Monday midget league practice starts with 9 year olds at 9 a.m., 10 years at 10:30, 11 at 2 p.m., and 12 at 3:30 p.m.
Hobbs announces a gala celebration and reopening of Milo's Market in a remodeled larger store now Milo's Super Market. The re opening includes a carnival of bargains for a seventh anniversary sale, a doubled floor space, new household section, expanded produce and frozen ice cases, and a self service meat department.
Local report notes the opening of a Conoco station in Plains Grand with a daylong celebration. The Citizen announces free drinks for all visitors and two cent pricing on certain items during the opening hours.
The Cache Valley festival in Utah and Idaho invites towns to enter Morningpasses and floats. Three princesses may be candidates for the Darling Queen title. Parade on Saturday June 18 at 9 p m offers total prize money around 400 dollars across junior float, princess, 4 H, and open class categories.
Samuel L Smith aged 67 died Sunday at Logan LDS Hospital from coronary occlusion suffered at his Riverdale county farm. Born June 23, 1884 in Riverdale to Hyrum J Smith and Elvira Walker Smith. He married Minnie Hansen June 6 1918 in the Salt Lake temple. they parented eight children. Surviving are his widow six children Dean C Theo L David H and Opal all of Riverdale. Odessa and Relda McGregor of Cleveland. ten grandchildren. brothers Hyrum Lafayette Elroy and sister Clotilda. (Continued on page 5)
H J Dollinger of the U S Chamber of Commerce will speak at an outdoor meeting Monday at 8 PM in the Preston area. The program includes sandwiches and refreshments served. committee members include Arnold Sant, Lyle Shipley, Frances Luthy, Belva Hart, Grant Jones, Max Norton, and Burton Mase. Dollinger, district manager of the Intermountain district, brings 25 years in commercial organization work and national recognition in retail trade development.
Senator Heath reports discouraging progress on the sugar bill after high level talks in Washington. He described meetings with Vice President Nixon, Sherman Adams, and other leaders, noting a policy split between agriculture and state departments and attempts to rally support from Idaho Oregon Washington Utah and Colorado.
