Franklin County fair board approves the 1954 three day county fair to run August 26 through 28 at a central site with a new 36 by 100 foot building. Mia Mae Sampson Brown 48 of 54 East Second North Preston died at home Thursday night after a brief illness. Born May 3, 1906 in Brigham City Utah to John and Sarah Duke Sampson she married John R Brown October 23 1928 in the Logan LDS temple. Survived by husband mother and five children Irene Fuhri man John R Jerry D Nancy Lee James D and Jeanine B Hart all of Preston and Salt Lake City five grandchildren and five siblings Goldie Cragger Merrill Sampson John Sampson Leona Fullmer Ruth Maher. Former Resident Dies in Boise Hospital
Vernon L Chapman formerly of Preston and Poca Tellio died Tuesday at the veterans hospital in Boise from a heart ailment. He was a World War I veteran and aviation instructor in World War II. Survived by siblings John Chapman of Mesa Alice Rigby Lidia Dowdle George Chapman Ethel Chapman James Chapman and Mable Carier. Funeral services will be announced later.

Local weather observer C M Crabtree reports an exceptionally hot spell with highs reaching 98 on June 23 and 102 on July 13, tying or breaking records several times in the past 30 years. The 1932 high of 105 remains the record, while June average daytime temps ran 77.9 this year versus 79.2 last year and 81.7 in 1952.

Lundquist Completes Training to Deploy to Korea
Leon Lundquist completed seven to ten weeks of ammunition supply specialty training in Baltimore Maryland after basic at Fort Ord California and a transfer to Fort Lewis Washington. He is now being sent to Pusan Korea. He graduated from Preston High School and LDS Seminary in 1952.

The Franklin County Farm Bureau federation announced a talent find and speech contest on Friday August 27 along with a beauty contest for girls ages 16 to 21. There are three talent age groups 1 to 12 13 to 18 and 19 to 28 with the younger group in the afternoon and the older groups in the evening. Local contests should conclude by August 20 and winners travel to the county contest. Prizes are planned for winners.

At Camp Hunt on Bear Lake the ninth annual 4-H club camp saw Franklin and Oneida counties total 302 participants. The event featured swimming roller skating handcraft a Minitonka cave trip a lakeside bonfire party and ample food. Richard D. Fisher Geis of Oxford was promoted to airman second class. He serves as an operations clerk in the fighter bomber wing known as the Head Hunter squadron. Fisher has been in the Air Force since March 1953 and arrived in Korea March 9, 1954 from Lowry Field Denver.

Franklin Sailor in Collier's Radio-Active Dust Tale
Franklin youth Jimmie Lowe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Lowe, was aboard a ship trapped by radio active dust in a July Collier's magazine account about navy missions. Lowe, six other men exposed to radiation, was taken to Oakland Navy Hospital on May 26 and remains under observation. His wife, also in California, has returned to her former banking job in San Francisco.
