Franklin Girl Named Queen at 1943 Preston Rodeo
Franklin Lions candidate Carma Oliverson was chosen queen of the 1943 Preston rodeo after judging at the rodeo grounds. Seven county contestants competed with Maxine Condie and Edythe Lindhardt named as attendants. Judges Lon Smith Clyde Davies and Chub Lundberg praised all entrants. The queen and attendants will parade at night and perform at the rodeo program, with prizes of 20 and two 15s. Leo Hobbs rode the winner’s black horse and will accompany the queen during rodeo days.

Six County Men to Enlist in July Selective Service
Six men from Franklin County will fill the July Selective Service call, led by Preston B. Paull, son of George and Mrs. Paull. Paull served in the Flying Tigers in the Burma theater before U.S. entry and now enters service in San Francisco. Others bound for Ft Downglas on August 4 are Joseph Egley Milford Thompson and Allan Stevenson. Edes D. Hi and Dan P. Campbell will join the Navy and depart Boise for assignment.

Preston Readies for Big Rodeo Cavalcade
Preston prepares for a major rodeo with stock arriving at the cattle corrals in the city. More than fifty horses, eighteen Brahma bulls, and over a hundred cattle are quartered on Preston’s rodeo grounds. Hill Field military units, Major H Schells and Lt. Maury will coordinate. A thirty six piece band and 75 soldiers will march in nightly parades with jeeps, trucks, and aircraft display items. Parade starts 7 p m nightly, gathering at the rodeo grounds by 6 30 p m.

Noon Messenger Kids Mail Service in Franklin County
The Noon Messenger Mail Service extends daily from Preston to Dayton at noon to pick up mail from southbound train No 32 at 12 08 and meet northbound train No 32 at 11 21. It will also carry Preston outgoing mail to the trains. The chamber of commerce pushed for the service, improving mail times across Pocatello Boise Cache Valley and the northwest, with Congress member Henry Dvorshak aiding investigation of the delinquent railway distribution system. Preston city adopts a 29 mill levy for the coming year matching the prior year’s level. General fund allocations total 29.00 with 6.75 for fire, 5.00 police, 10.00 street maintenance, 6.00 salaries, 2.00 parks, 2.00 sewer and 3.00 miscellaneous. The plant operation costs about 29,600 versus 33,500 last year, keeping total city spending at 74,000. Bond interest 25,000, water works 14,000, street lighting 3,000, library 2,500, with minor shifts from 1942-43 figures.

Strawberry-Sharon forest highway planned survey visit
Wernest Gilgen and W D White of the Public Roads Administration visited Preston on Thursday to plan a survey of the Strawberry Sharon forest highway. They will conduct the final location survey for a 26 foot wide road linking Preston with Montpelier Bear Lake county. The project, endorsed by Franklin County residents, is expected to span several months and be among post war rehabilitation efforts directed by the Ogden PRA office.
