The Preston Jaycees hosted a highly successful Independence Day celebration with a daylong lineup and a late parade. Crowds filled State and Oneida streets for floats costumes and prize winning entries while no injuries were reported.

Preston attorney reports GOP convention talk at Rotary

Ben Johnson of Preston, honorary sergeant at arms for the Republican national convention in Philadelphia, described presidential hopefuls backstage strategy. He praised Dewey forces for strength, noted Stassen’s popular support but said Ohio opposition harmed his VP prospects. The Idaho delegation aligned with the Stassen camp.

Sparks Brothers Purchase Weston Smith Jewelry Store

Lyman and Don Sparks acquire Weston Smith Jewelry in Montpelier and will rename it Sparks Jewelry Company. Lyman operates the Montpelier store while Don becomes manager. The Sparks family plans a three week stock sale followed by a two week remodel with new fixtures and a watch repair department. Re opening is scheduled for mid August.

Employee of City Found Dead in Preston Home

Lorin Peterson a 40 year old Preston city employee was found dead at his home 206 West Oneida by neighbor Harold Manning. Coroner Moses Hancey ruled death a personal safety related gunshot wound from a 22 caliber rifle. Peterson born May 9 1908 in Trenton Utah grew up in California and Preston. Survived by widow Dora Leone Boyle and three children Patricia Joan and Thomas L. Services set for Saturday at 1 p.m. in the third ward LDS church.

Automobile Destroyed By Flames At Texaco Station

Sunday evening about 9 p.m. a 1935 Hudson owned by Wayne Hollingsworth of Tremonton was a total loss after a fire started under the gas tank at Cluft's Texaco on State Street. Station employees moved the car from the driveway, no injuries reported and no damage to station fixtures. Authorities said the tank being full prevented an explosion.

State Check-Up for Trucks and Licenses

The state police announce a week long check up for trucks and autos in Franklin County Pres ton land. Owners must show registration papers and licenses and ensure vehicles meet safety standards including reflectors lights and proper plates. City police and sheriff assist the traffic inspection with planned lane setups and testing.

University of Idaho visit to Aberdeen farm station

Franklin county extension agent Dan Roberts reports an invitation from Ralph Knight to county farmers to tour the Aberdeen experiment station in Aberdeen on Tuesday July 20. The program begins at 10 a.m. with a station tour and explanatory talks, followed by a noon lunch and an afternoon lineup of university specialists discussing topics of interest. Transportation assistance is available at the county agent’s office.

Preston Junior Legion Loses Two Games

In two games the Preston junior legion team fell 5-8 to Pocatello on the road and 3-6 to Ogden at home. Preston was outhit in both contests, issuing three walks to Pocatello’s five and four hits to Ogden’s seven. A return game against Pocatello is set for here under lights at the local park.

Franklin County Canning Center Opens July 14

The Franklin County canning center will open July 14 and operate Wednesdays Thursdays and Fridays initially, expanding to Mondays through Saturdays if demand supports it. The canning committee approved hiring helpers, with Mrs. Clara Larsen as instructor and Ivan Rasmussen to run the retorts. Mrs. Clyde Nash serves as clerk secretary. The center, an Idaho state board funded educational program, relies on participants bringing their own produce while using school and state equipment. The instructor oversees preparation, processing, and proper canning, while the secretary tracks can counts and reports to school and state boards. Patrons wash, prep, and portion produce, then follow processing steps until cans cool and can be stored at home.

Preston Merchants Join Organization of Small Business

Leo C. Crowley of Missoula Montana, district manager for the National Federation of Small Business, spoke in Preston last week promoting a new Preston group. The federation aims to give small business a voice in policy through ballots and arranged summaries to congressional committees. About 25 local businesses joined, with J Homer Johnson chosen as Preston group chairman.

Donkey Baseball Game Scheduled by Local Legion

Edward Kross of the local American Legion post notes uncertainty over team names while announcing two mystery squads will play donkey baseball at the local diamond on Friday night July 23. The event features batters riding donkeys to circle the bases as standard plays occur.

Riverdale Plans Annual Celebration in July

Riverdale hosts its annual celebration on the fourth Saturday in July featuring a baseball game between Franklin County league leaders at about 2 30 p m plus horse races and children’s contests. The MIA sponsors entertainment with Sherman Woolf as chairman and a variety of refreshments offered.

Plane Crash in Hawaiian Waters Fatal for Lieut John Petterberg

Lieut John Petterberg marine corps pilot son of Mr and Mrs Theo Petterborg Preston was killed in an air crash off the Hawaiian islands. His plane sank in 36 seconds after the crash two hours after the battleship New York sank. Petterborg was born Feb 12 1920 a Preston high school graduate and BYU attendee. He served in the South Pacific 1944 45 and held the rank of captain before commissioning as a first lieutenant.

School Voting Favors County Plan Amid Partial Returns

Voters across nine districts weighed a proposed reorganization creating a county school district on the east side. Totals from nine districts show 698 votes with 458 for and 140 against. Franklin No. 2 and Whitney No. 3 showed strong opposition, while Treasureton, Glencoe, and Banida backed the plan unanimously.

Weston Pioneer Celebration Plans Told for July 24

The Weston annual Pioneer celebration on July 24 includes a boxing card nearly finished for the evening program. Eldon Hansen chairs the celebration committee and says events start with a morning parade and continue through the day into the night with ball games pony judging and a boxing card opening at 8 30. Proceeds will fund construction of Weston’s new chapel.
