Preston postmaster Wallace Jensen retires after 32 years

Wallace Jensen, Preston postmaster, retires after 32 years in the postal service. He started as a sub clerk in 1936, rose to postmaster, and recalls changes from war-time rates to ZIP codes. R.D. Butcher named officer in charge until a permanent postmaster is chosen. Jensen plans church work and travel, with two sons and five grandchildren.

Banc Northwest Wins Low Bid for East Side Bond Issue

Banc Northwest of Omaha was the low bidder for bonds to fund a 200000 addition to Preston High School. The net rate was 5.75 percent with a 19370 premium lowering the rate to 5.733925. Second bid came from Foster and Marshall Inc. at 5.908 percent with no premium. Bids opened June 18 by the district’s agent First Security Bank.

Marketing emphasized as key to wheat prices by Idaho farmers

Riverdale farmer Jean Smith urged orderly marketing to lift wheat prices while warning of abrupt price shifts due to weather and policy. Nezperce grower Bud Dunham foresees strong foreign demand despite weather threats in Russia, Australia, Argentina and China. Idaho official Harold West cautions crops remain distant from record levels with winter wheat roughly 36 million bushels, down 10 percent from last year.

Banida Man Escapes Injury After Roll Over

Edward Trujillo, 41, Banida, escaped injury when his Volkswagen left Highway 91 Friday at 7:30 am, hit a ditch and rolled onto its top one quarter mile south of Banida. Trujillo, who said he dozed at the wheel returning from work, climbed out through the windshield unscathed. car damaged $1500.

Penneys Closes Preston Store After 67 Years in Operation

The Penneys in Preston, among the town’s oldest businesses, closed on Saturday after 67 years. Opened in 1908, it moved locations several times before settling in its final Preston site in 1939. OD Robinson, a longtime manager, recalled postwar growth and a 1954 trophy for high regional gains. The closure stemmed from competition, chain-wide volume cuts, shift to self service in 1963, and a move away from small area stores.

Food Preservation Clinic Set Today At Fairgrounds

Basic techniques for canning freezing and drying of food will be demonstrated at a preservation clinic today July 2 at the Robinson Fair Building from 1 to 3 30 pm. Demonstrators include Brenda Womack Caribou County Extension Home Economist Marlene Bunderson Bear Lake County Extension Home Economist and Judy Starkey Franklin County Extension Home Economist. Canning season is upon us and area residents are urged to attend for up to date times and procedures.

Senior Citizens Plan Open House for New Center

The Franklin County Senior Citizens Center opens with an open house on Saturday July 12 from 1 30 to 4 30 pm at the American Legion Hall Preston. Spokeswoman Mrs Ann Clements says the event replaces the monthly dinner with refreshments entertainment and educational films. Della Crockett chairs the event, as the county seniors welcome a two year drive for a center. After a site manager is hired the center will operate on Tuesdays Wednesdays Fridays and Saturdays.
