Federal land bank associations history and growth
The Federal Farm Loan Act allowed ten or more farmers to form local land bank associations offering cooperative credit. Charters were granted after securing land bank loans totaling $20 000 or more, leading to about 5 000 associations in twenty years, then consolidations reduced the number to about 800 serving the continental United States Puerto Rico and Alaska.
