Franklin county plans a reduced 1943 budget with total administrative and cost program set at 3268 955.33, about 25 000 less than 1942. Tax collections drop to 66 000, other revenues projected around 100 000, delinquencies estimated at 31 000, and departments trimmed to cut overall governmental costs ahead of the February 8 regular meeting.
A state salvage report lists county scrap results. Bear Lake topped with 97.8 percent of its 1 186 650 quota, while our county logged 36 percent of 1 534 600, with full credits pending from state heads. Other counties show strong overages including Adams 177.2 percent and Boise 280.7 percent.
Archery practice event announced for all men at Dr Hawkes clinic on State Street Friday at 7 30 pm. Plan to move indoors to the Opera House with targets set up for winter shooting and potential weekly sessions if turnout is strong.
Farm machinery courses begin Monday February 1 and February 6 for machine and motor work. Ray Geisler will instruct. Nat J. Wardle acts as supervisor. Enrollees meet at Ray Geisler shop on First South Street at 10 am Monday. Farmers may enroll in farm machine repair also through Mr Wardle the Agriculture Instructor.
The county USDA War Board released changes to the 1943 food production program for Franklin County bean potato and fresh vegetable growers. The plan offers payments for planting 90 to 110 percent of original 1943 goals and assures assistance to raise and handle increased output. Payments include 50 cents a bushel on potatoes and $20 per acre for beans plus $50 an acre for truck crops exceeding 90 percent of goals. Loans on dry beans and equipment requests are being pushed to the War Production Board.
Final medical examiners of the Selective Service in Pocatello cleared the January quota. Twenty five men from the county are requested for February. The departing group includes Donald A. Johnson Blaine R. Nash Don H. Nielsen John H. Parser Raymond Sharp Gene L. Johnson John D. Smith Lymen Jensen and Mark L. Winward. They will leave Preston at 2 12 7 Friday morning for preliminary training.
The Idaho House approved a bill repealing the senior citizens grants act by 40 to 13. The repeal aims to shift funds to the Public Assistance Act while preserving pension ideas and potential monthly allocations up to 40 dollars, with final Senate action expected soon.
Members of the Preston Lions Club observed Founders Day at the weekly luncheon. Russel Crockett commemorated Melvin Jones, founder of the Lions movement, with Rulon Dunn as program chairman. Fred Sargent presented a film on timber industry challenges, and the club planned to sell bonds in February to fund renovations for the Boise USN cruiser recently famed and active in the South Pacific.
Idaho editors at the State Editorial Association annual convention in Boise voted to oppose any move by the legislature to discard the Direct Primary. They urged the public to pressure lawmakers to keep the primary and preserve the people’s right to choose nominees. Officers named for the coming year include Clair Skinner, Jerome Taylor, and Wm Swindler, with a board featuring W R Twining, Albert Lee, and others from Idaho papers.
Captain Russel Fisher spoke on the Army Air Corps experiences during the Wednesday Preston Rotary Club gathering. He was home on leave from California and was accompanied by his father Vic Fisher of Oxford. Sargent of the Cache Forest Reserve showed a film on wildfire threats in the Imber and forest areas of the U.S.
The Civic Music association in Logan plans a February 12 recital by world famous violinist Szigeti replacing the Russian Cossacks program. Dr. N A Pedersen says the recital will be at the Logan tabernacle with a start time of 8 15 p m.
Franklin county plans a nationwide Saturday evening program to mark the first birthday of President Roosevelt and raise dimes for the fight against infantile paralysis. Wim G Palmer urges local committees to participate and contribute to the national cause.
Special services marked by national Boy Scout Week invite wards to hold Sunday ceremonies on February 6 recognizing the founding of the Scouts. Parents with a Scout child will be asked to wear a ribbon and attend services as leaders emphasize outdoor hikes camps and civic defense. Roughly 400 000 Scouts 16 or older could see military service before the war ends.
Mothers of junior high school students are urged to attend a group meeting on February 1 at the Jefferson building. Superintendent Bjorkman will speak on social activities of junior high boys. two mothers will respond and a discussion will follow to address concerns about activity levels. Lyle Shipley will sing two vocal solos.
Idaho Lions club units take on a twofold task to fund war bonds and a $1,000,000 reconditioning of the cruiser Boise. The drive runs through Washington's Birthday, featuring a house to house campaign, a miniature Boise on display, and county bond carnivals. Local committees led by Wel don Nash and Avery C Conine map out a vigorous countywide push.
Judge Downing granted Earl Gilbert an extension to obtain legal counsel in a burglary case. The defendant is charged with breaking into Knudsen Packing Plant and stealing about 150 dollars in food. Trial set for Friday February 5. Other cases include quieting title for Christopherson to Junius LavVar Bosworth and annulment of John Davis Smith and Betty Jane Garfield marriage.
Franklin county begins a countywide sign up for 1943 war production on farms and ranches. About 1200 farms will be contacted by state AAA and USDA War Board officials starting February 8 to plan staple and war crops, assess labor, credit, machinery and material needs, and promote conservation practices. A large sign chart will track progress with a farmer figure adjusting a strength tester and Hitler caricature as a target, marking percentage completion across the county.
In St Franklin a new fill failed where Weston Fairview highway crosses a water siphon leaving the road impassable until area dries. Weston town reports widespread basement floods and several washouts while state aid is sought to repair damaged sectors.
