First aid course opens for Civil Defense corps
Forty five members of the Civilian Defense corps attended the first aid school opened Wednesday evening in the courthouse. Weldon Nash chaired the OCD in Franklin county and explained the ten week, three hour weekly program. Scott Dunlop of Utah Power Safety will conduct the senior Red Cross course citing the county’s need with only two doctors for over 10 000 people. LaVoyle Nielsen named secretary as OCD messengers will train in the junior Red Cross first aid course. Elias Hansen to conduct Saturday sessions for Boy Scouts in the courthouse junior class.

Ardent Leader Dies. Preston Civic Figure Laid To Rest
Funeral services were held for Ardent Leader and Preston civic figure Fackrell who died Monday at his home. Born July 9 1885 in Randolph he served as Oneida stake clerk and Franklin County deputy assessor. He joined the LDS church in 1905 and labored in the west for 28 months. He and Wealthy Sutten were married September 20 1910 in the Salt Lake temple. Before Preston, he lived in Paris where he led church and civic affairs and served on the city council. He moved to Preston in 1917 and championed Scouting as Troop 32 scoutmaster for 18 years earning the Silver Beaver award. Continued on Page 10.

Prominent Woman Merrill George Dies After Illness
Mrs Bertha Merrill George a prominent church worker and bank examiner’s wife died at her home Monday after an extended illness. Born in Smithfield Utah she was daughter of Samuel A Merrill and Pivira Tidwell Merrill. Survivors include her husband L Milton George three brothers and four sisters including Dr L V Merrill Preston and Mrs Elizabeth Kay Swan Lake. She held many church positions and taught school at Bear Lake before joining First National Bank Preston as bookkeeper.
