GOP Lincoln Day Banquet Set With Dr Edwin Peterson Speaker

Dr Edwin Peterson of Utah State University will deliver the Lincoln Day Banquet address on Saturday night at 7 30 in the courthouse social hall. The event is hosted by the Franklin County Republican Central committee and the Young Republicans with Richard Hendricks as master of ceremonies. Peterson is a USA military programs coordinator and Boys State adviser, and he previously led the College of Southern Utah social science department from 1937 to 1955.

A Navy recruiting office will be opened soon in Preston staffed by one man The unit will serve Franklin Bear Lake Caribou and Oneida counties and comes as part of a wider recruiting push announced by the Navy officials in Pocatello.

Four students were named champion spellers in the Jefferson Oral Spelling contest held last week. Grade winners were Nan Hansen third grade Miriam Hawkes fourth grade Siiney Hansen fifth grade and Candyce Howell sixth grade. Special awards went to Mark Hart for Word Power with medals and certificates for winners.

Preston City Council Proposes Budget With Surplus

The Preston city council proposed a 210 490 63 dollar budget this week noting last year’s operation showed a surplus of 51 059 49. The new budget increases about 16 000 with higher sewer bond amortization and higher legal health and judge costs. Last year the city budgeted 196 237 86 and spent 194 146 29 with unappropriated surplus 34 715 15 and receipts of 245 205 78 including 91 979 83 from taxes.

The Franklin County Fish and Game Club will hold a banquet on Saturday February 20 at the Preston High School gymnasium. 1965 officer elections will take place. Door prizes will be awarded and refreshments run from 6 30 to 8 p m. Tickets are priced at 1 50.

Preston City regular employees receive a 10 percent wage increase at a city council meeting last Wednesday. Police officers are excluded from the raise. Council opened bids for a new police car and a city truck, with four bids reviewed. The radar unit will be replaced with a larger model.

The Franklin County Democratic Central Committee announced J. Lloyd Christensen as temporary chairman replacing Mr. Whittle. Christensen, a Mink Creek precinct committeeman and former bishop, joins Mrs. Karl Ballif as state committeewoman and Leonard Johnson as state committeeman.

Wendell G. Eames, a Preston native and 1942 University of Idaho graduate, received the U S Department of Commerce meritorious services silver medal this week. He heads the National Driver Register Service in Washington D C and was honored by Secretary John T Connor for leadership in establishing and improving driver licensing and records communications.

County residents urged to study proposed sales tax bills

Officials of the Farm Bureau in Franklin County appealed to residents to study the proposed sales tax bill and Farm Bureau tax structure and contact state legislators. City Council weighs street improvement plan and costs

A city council report outlines a $4.28 million street reconstruction project covering about 25 blocks with storm sewers curbs gutters and full width paving.
