Idaho Bicentennial official backs Oneida Stake Academy restoration

J Meredith Neil Idaho Bicentennial Commission executive director visited Preston to push for matching federal funds to restore the 80 year old Oneida Stake Academy building He urged public support and labor contributions noting federal Bicentennial funds are available Idaho has received 170000 last year and 250000 this year for projects Friends of the Academy cited local pride and potential National Registry placement as key steps toward funding An architect supported preservation and said the project could be listed if a plan is approved plus donated labor could cover part of the 14000 to 16000 needed for safety work

Leaun Otten to Speak on Heavenly Father Child Relations

Brigham Young University assistant professor Leaun G Otten will lecture at the Know Your Religion series at the North Stake Center. Melvin Sharp said the talk entitled Heavenly Father Child Relations From The Doctrine and Covenants will cover principles of application with children and others. The talk begins at 8 p.m. with a $1.50 adult and 50 cent child admission. Otten previously taught at Utah State University's Institute of Religion in Logan.

Free tax help for Franklin County residents

Franklin County taxpayers can get free assistance with income tax computations Friday in Preston. IRS and Idaho State Tax Commission representatives will be in the courthouse commission room from 9 a.m. to 4 30 p.m. to help and provide forms.

Preston City Council Meeting Scheduled for Feb 20

The Preston council will meet next Thursday night February 20. Mayor Lyle Shipley said the session was delayed earlier due to conflicts with major community events.

Commissioners Discuss Senior Citizens and Bicentennial Plans

Franklin County Commissioners heardSenior Citizens seek use of the Legion Hall to meet state requirements and obtain funding. They discussed Bicentennial ideas including a five acre Riverdale park and a Preston depot museum with Roy Sorenson donating historical items. Sheriff Larsen urged funding for photographic equipment and a county juvenile work program was proposed. A new Emergency Operation Center basement plan was considered.

Pie eating contest to highlight Washington Birthday fete

Floyd Diderickson and Bert Gailey will judge eight pie eating categories at the Washington Birthday event in the Larson Building Preston at 2 p.m. Entry costs 50 cents with proceeds to Primary Children’s Hospital and March of Dimes. VIP lineup includes Rotary Kiwanis Elks Lions and local officials. Banks and government offices close for the holiday.

Miss Franklin County Pageant Set For April 19

Plans for the Miss Franklin County Pageant are under way with Dr Larry Stokes as general chairman and Mrs Eleanor Lewis as director. Sponsored by the Preston Lions Club, the pageant will be held Saturday April 19 with a February 28 entry deadline. Open to high school seniors up to age 26, it is a Miss America preliminary. county winner advances to Miss Idaho. For applications and details contact Mrs Lewis or a Lions member.
