Preston hosts the Fifth District Sub-District Basketball Tournament next week with teams from Artmo Lava Weston Downey and Franklin. Games run Thursday February 25 through Saturday February 27 with admission 30c students 40c adults per session.
Franklin County plans a county wide 4 H program for 1943 led by County Agent William Craner. In 1942 the county had 27 clubs with 223 members and several project areas. Members completing work will receive achievement seals at meetings in Franklin, Preston, Riverdale and Mink Creek.
The Preston Archery Club elected Bill Hansen of the Uteh Power and Light Co as president and received permission to hold Friday night practices at the Preston Opera House starting February 19 at 8 pm. All are invited to shoot with bows and arrows, with a $1 membership fee to cover targets.
The trial of Earl Gilbert, 28, begins its second day in district court before Judge J. O. Dowhink. He faces first degree burglary for alleged entry at a location on January 5 and the seizure of 600 pounds ham and a freshly slaughtered pig. Accomplices Hen Baird and Robert Warren are not currently up for trial.
County officials report bond debt reduced to 82000 with a sinking fund of 23929 and a small surplus. Cash balances are strong with no outstanding warrants and current operations financed from collections. The 1943 levy is 98 cents per 100 dollars, with a budget cut of about 25000 from 1942, signaling continued fiscal conservatism and savings for taxpayers.
Members of the Tolalio Volunteer Reserve will host partners at the February 18 dance night at the Opera House. The social committee includes Sgt. Harold B. Allen, Russell Crockett, Sidney Biggs and Smith Allen.
The Sixth Ward celebration Tuesday elected Miss Donna Corbridge as queen with attendants Miss Barbara Monson and Miss Gwen Phippen. A floor show featured Mia dances with participants including Corbridge Christen sen McClun Martin Mendenhall Purser and others amid Valentine themed decorations.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p m in the Clifton ward chapel for Geneva Sant Taylor 39 wife of Leroy Taylor of Clifton who died Wednesday morning in Preston after major operations. Burial will be in Clifton cemetery. She was born in Clifton in September 1903 married Leroy Taylor in Logan in January 1927 and was active in L D S churchwork and M L A Clifton farming. Survived by husband daughter Shirley Jean parents T J and Laura Sant and brothers and sisters Arthur Sant Las Vegas Roy Sant Clifton Captain Paul Sant Wilmington Mabel Mathig Virginia Lee Bob Logan and Beth Rice Logan.
Governor Bott senior signs repeal of the Senior Citizens Grant Act after Senate and House approval. He calls the Pension a war and urges a possible million dollar increase in Public Assistance to raise monthly aid from 27.50 to about 35 dollars. House passed a bill to abolish the Direct Primary. Senate consideration uncertain amid repeal fallout.
Mrs Nell Montague Clayton wife of I E Clayton died suddenly at 9 30 am Thursday at her Preston residence. Funeral services are planned for Sunday at 12 pm in the Second Ward chapel, by Hendricks mortuary. A large number of friends and relatives mourn her passing.
The Franklin county swine growers met February 6 at the County Court House to discuss hog production and marketing. County agent William A Craperton illustrated price comparisons for hogs at Ogden and Preston, showing hauling costs, yardage, commissions, insurance, and shrinkage.
Announcement states Jack’s Cafe, recently closed, will reopen to the public this week. Clinton Hendricks of St Anthony has purchased the stock and fixtures, with his wife assisting. they bring two years’ experience running the largest cafe in St Anthony. The venue next to the Burnham Hotel will keep its name and offer the banquet hall.
R R Rowell was elected president of the Preston Chamber of Commerce at the Monday night meeting. Bill Davis became vice president and Weldon Nash was named executive secretary. Jared Lewin and Ray Bright held former posts, with four directors ending terms and several re elected for two year terms. Financials showed over $800 in bank and about $800 in dues to be collected from 1942.
A series of monthly patriotic advertisements will begin next week in the Citizen. The first ad supports the Preston Lions Club bond drive to renovate the cruiser Belge during February. The Red Cross drive is planned for March with ads promoting its campaign. Businesses are asked to respond to letters offering a small ad fee.
Crawford head of the Farm Security program in Franklin county spoke to the Preston Rotary club about department activities to aid farmers with proper finance for the war effort. Tom Boyle head of the U S Employment office in Preston and Weldon Moore of Camp Crowder Missouri attended as guests. New members Supt. R J Bjorkman and Aaron Gardner were introduced and will lead the Rotary Ann Program in two weeks with Jed Leyis arranging a 25 cent member contribution and a biweekly bond drawing. Wallace Olsen Franklin county commissioner is in Boise for matters related to the current legislative session.
Franklin County residents may obtain tire application forms at the Preston chamber of commerce in the bank building. The chamber staff will help in filling out the form, noting the transfer of the matter from the ration office at the courthouse.
The annual Franklin County Fish and Game association banquet will be held Saturday February 20 at 8 p m in the basement of the Franklin County Court House in Preston. Membership drives run this week, fee one dollar, covers banquet and program. Ladies admitted on membership ticket. Officers to be elected at the banquet. Candidates listed for President, Vice-president, Secretary, and Board of Directors. Nominations open to any member until Thursday February 18 at 6 p m to Ian Marshall or Geo Heath.
Plans for the Forty-Niner party of the Preston Lions to be held Thursday February 25 at the Persiana advance. General chairman Harlan Simmons leads an organizing team including Weldon Nash Nat Eawards Elmo Keller and A C Conine. The event aims to boost a bond drive to renovate the cruiser Boise and support Lions state fundraising. A window display featured a miniature cruiser model near Foss clothing on State street.
Intermountain commentator Aigthur Gaeth will headline the Preston Chamber of Commerce annual meeting at the high school auditorium this Saturday at 8 30 p m. Lewis will report the chamber's year’s work before Gaeth’s talk on current world battles. The program includes band music, color pledge, Melodians numbers, guest introductions, a vocal duet, and benediction by President Merrill.
The Citizen announces stricter subscription controls due to rising costs. Delinquent subscribers will receive a postcard this week, a second notice next week, and will be dropped from the list on March 1 if payment is not received.
