Beet Sugar Acreage Boost Seen Vital to Nation

Thomas Heath of the Franklin County Sugar Co. notes the U S Department of Agriculture’s 1960 sugar beet acreage boost to 985 000 acres, 60 000 more than 1959, forecasting a larger sugar supply to meet American demand and offset offshore shortages. He cites 1959 beet yields and explains the industry’s broader role beyond housewives, including major food producers. Idaho gains 93 966 acres. Franklin Bannock Caribou and Cache counties will add about 385 acres. acreage set aside for new growers.

Cutter Races Slated Near Preston On Saturday

The Preston Boots and Saddle Club advertises cutter or chariot races for Saturday afternoon starting at 1 30. Nine teams or 18 horses are entered for the event three miles south of Preston with prizes for the winners.

Two Cars Collide In Turn Near Native Lumber Co

An accident Tuesday December 22 at 2 20 p m on highway 86 near Native Lumber Co in Preston involved Grace Smith of Wellsville driving a 1950 model car coming from the west and struck by a car from the east turning into Native Lumber Co Lon Cahoon of Dayton drove the westbound 1947 sedan The crash was investigated by Don Bergquist police chief with no citations issued Three other passengers were noted in the report Continued on page 5.

Preston teen named junior miss in state finals

Anna Lee Fisher 17, daughter of Allen and Mrs Fisher of Preston, was chosen by the Preston Junior Chamber to represent the town as junior miss in the Idaho state finals to be held January 21 to 23 in Pocatello. She leads the Preston High operetta, belongs to the Pixies and baton corps, and serves as organist and pianist. The winner advances to Mobile Alabama for a national contest with $10,000 in scholarships. John Hart, 16, also of Preston, won the annual Christmas poster contest sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce and the local art department.

Longtime Whitney resident Fielding H Winward dies at Whitney Utah

Fielding H Winward aged 83 of Whitney Utah died at home after a long life of public service. Born September 28 in South Jordan to John William and Catharine Fogember Winward he served a mission in 1898 and held numerous local posts. Survived by many sons and daughters and extensive grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services Saturday at 1 pm in the Whitney ward conducted by Bishop William A Davis. Burial in Whitney cemetery by Webb Mortuary.
