Babson reports a 1977 solid economy with defused inflation risks and cautious optimism for 1978. The forecast notes a 11-12 percent real GNP gain inflationarily inflated, modest industrial growth, and continued domestic expansion despite inflation and foreign competition concerns.
Two New Year's Eve dances are planned in Preston on Saturday night. The North Stake Center hosts a youth dance from 8:36 to midnight with Spice as the band. Admission is 4 dollars per couple and 2 dollars for a single. Dress is best with no Levi’s allowed. Adults dance at the South Stake Center starting at p.m. with admission 2 dollars for a single and 1 dollar per couple and a good orchestra.
The council faced a contract dispute after West Motor Co bid 11 288 85 for a garbage truck chassis amid two higher bids. Legal counsel said the city could not back out after award. A separate dog ordinance amendment to curb sheep depredations was discussed, proposing leash rules and higher license fees.
The Fairview Water District board will meet to award bids for a new well and enlarged culinary water facility. Wayne Stevens Co of Boise posted the Phase One bid of 21 970 dollars for the well, while Agriculture Services of Blackfoot bid 228 133 dollars for Phase Two storage reservoir and line installation. The second phase bid may be reconsidered if a qualification affects eligibility, with Clair Bernstein Construction Co of Logan as a backup at 228 575 dollars. Both bids are below engineer estimates, and Farmers Home Administration support could allow construction to start in January.
The Citizen and area merchants announce a 1978 stock derby for Franklin County's first baby of the year born after midnight next Sunday. Prizes include bouquets, gift certificates, a Magnavox transistor radio, gas, oil, tires, jewelry, a chicken barrel, and more from local businesses.
