History of Christmas Seals Origins and Rise
Danish postal clerk Einar Holboell conceived a penny stamp in 1904 to fund children’s hospitals. The idea spread to 45 countries before Holboell’s 1927 death. Emily Bissell popularized it in the U S in 1907, raising 3000 dollars after enlisting a Philadelphia newspaper columnist. The first nationwide sale followed in 1908 backed by Red Cross and Tuberculosis associations.
