Churches Elks and schools prepare for Christmas with services programs and Santa visits. Elks Charity Baskets and toy donations totaling about 35 baskets to be delivered Sunday. Preston Elks Family Night Friday at 7 30 pm includes Santa, games and refreshments. Charity dinner dance Saturday night follows.
Preston city crews cleaned and filled a pond behind Central School on county land. The second pond at Preston Golf and Country Club awaits complete cleaning as ice was too thin for equipment. Approval came from the city council per Lyle Shipley.
A large coin collection owned by Mr and Mrs Roy Sorensen of Preston is being used in the open house for a new bank in Ketchum Idaho. It is among the region's most complete displays and marks the 12th bank at which the Sorensens have showcased their coins. The Preston residents have collected items for years spanning from Christ to modern times.
About 73 Franklin county students and 38 Bannock county students attend Ricks College this year. The college reports 87 Idaho high schools sending grads, with Preston High School contributing 61 graduates, West Side 22, Grace 16, North Gem 8, and Soda Springs 14.
About 943 area farmers and stockmen share a $50 217.25 dividend from the Federal Land Bank Association of Preston. The payment comes from a portion of a $1 190 825 dividend declared by the Federal Land Bank of Spokane. The local association handles loans and services for the bank. The nationwide total dividends paid since 1944 exceed $11 million.
Franklin ward Explorers sponsor a holiday dance on December 27 with the Jensen Orchestra headlining. The event will feature a floor show door prizes and spot dance prizes with tickets sold through the ward or at the door.
Stanton Hawkes president of Franklin County Farm Bureau last year was named a director of the Idaho Farm Bureau at the state convention to serve from District. Hawkes cited W Chewan Canada as speaker at the national meet who claimed socialism waning after 20 years. The farm bureau noted 1 750 000 farm families and 6000 attended the convention. The Mink Creek Explorers ski tow will operate all next week except Wednesday above Mink Creek on the Strawberry Road.
The Citizen announces chocolates for readers renewing subscriptions and for new signups. New subscribers receive a box of chocolates, and those renewing for two years or more also get a free box. The offer runs until December.
The Preston City Council and Franklin County commissioners jointly rejected a tavern request to sell beer on New Year’s Eve. They said approval depended on the county’s action, but both bodies eventually turned thumbs down on the proposal.
Idaho highways 1968 construction program lists no new work for Highway 34. Only seal coating for four miles of Cleveland to Thatcher remains, with Treasureton to Cleveland nearly complete. Other items include a junkyard screen near Franklin county, U.S. 30N at Soda Springs, and three Interstate items from Downey including a grade and structures project, a scenic enhancement, and a Downey interchange south for 3.2 miles.
Winter weather slows travel as snow covers streets and schools in Cache county Utah Utah and nearby areas delay classes while plow crews toil around the clock. Forecasters predict four inches of dry snow with partial clearing and a 30 percent chance of more snow today. Authorities note few accidents despite hazardous conditions this week.
