A Franklin County farm bureau petition argues against nationwide sugar cutbacks harming small operations. It notes wartime shifts raised sugar output in some regions while Franklin County crops remain lean, urging policy to target surplus areas rather than small districts.
Advertisers are urged to place last minute Christmas greetings in the Preston Citizen Christmas issue, published one day early on Wednesday. Firms not contacted are asked to call or visit the office to arrange a greeting. Reporters and advertisers should submit copy early to maximize inclusion.
Dorothy R. Jensen of Dayton died in Preston hospital on Wednesday. Born April 2 1915 in Stone, she married LaVar E. Jensen in 1945. She was an active LDS member and chorister. Funeral services set for Monday at 1 p.m. in the Dayton ward chapel. Burial in Dayton cemetery.
West Side High School schedules a Christmas week program starting Monday December 20 with the chorus and groups performing at the Weston ward chapel at 8 PM The event titled The Spirit of Christmas is directed by Marion Hill music teacher and open to the public. Further events include a December 22 home economics mothers program at the high school with mothers of students as guests.

West Side Pirates started December 3 by defeating North Cache High 45 to 38. Player highlights include man of the evening with 15 points Balls 10 McKay and Porter nine each for the Pirates. North Cache top scorers were eagle 14 and Porter nine. The first quarter tied 10-10 before West Side pulled ahead. A rematch at North Cache Thursday saw a 28 to 38 loss with Tingey scoring 10 for North Cache and Neagle nine for North Cache. December 10 West Side beat Soda Springs 61 to 31 as West Side led easily with 26 field goals to five for Soda Springs. West Side page 5.
Mr and Mrs Grant Lewis of Franklin celebrate their golden wedding anniversary after 1904 marriage in Logan temple. Their children host an open house Sunday from 2 to 7 pm at the family home inviting relatives and friends with no gifts requested. both are active Latter-day Saints members and longtime Franklin residents.
The Preston High School choir and audience will attend a Christmas cantata next Monday at 10 a.m. in the school auditorium. The program features about 100 voices led by conductor Gary Misti with soloists and narrator stability.
Robert Anderson of Brestin, Joliet, joins Cranney Chevrolet Co as sales start. He brings auto experience from Salt Lake City and San Francisco, is Preston High School and University of Utah alumnus, served in the navy, and recently sailed Cahiti on the Malkai with Connie Hitchcock, noted maritime correspondent.
Chester Schmidt Christensen 65 of Preston died in a Salt Lake City hospital Tuesday morning after a lingering illness. He married Alice Calkins May 28, 1913 in Preston and served in multiple church roles. Survivors include his wife, four children, 16 grandchildren, and a brother and three sisters.
Herman Wilford Keller 63 died Tuesday after a brief illness. He was born February 1891 in Mink Creek, Utah, and lived much of his life in Preston ward. Survived by wife Mary Evans Keller and children, with brothers and sisters listed. Funeral services set for Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Franklin Stakehouse. viewing Friday at Webb Funeral Home and Saturday until service time. Burial in Preston Cemetery.
First returns from Christmas seal drives in Franklin County total $503 this week. Publicity chair Robert N. Acock notes the public supports TB prevention locally with part of funds staying in Idaho while the rest aids state and national efforts. He cites Idaho data on TB cases and deaths from 1953 and urges continued seal purchases.

Seth B Thompson a metalsmith third class U S Navy and Sgt Clair B Thompson U S Army sons of Mr and Mrs J Thompson of Weston Idaho Falls have both recently returned from overseas duty Seth spent 18 months aboard the USS Cruz CVA119 and 20 months aboard the USS Kearsarge CVA33 with two six month cruises to Korean waters visiting Pearl Harbor Yokosuka Sasebo Hong Kong China and the Philippine islands Clair served 17 months overseas with the 40th and 7th divisions in Chorwon and Kumhwa Korea where he was chief clerk in the American Red Cross field director's office He will soon leave for Hollywood Calif to resume studies in radio school.
The seventh year Preston Junior Chamber of Commerce sponsors a Franklin County student Christmas poster contest. The public is invited to view the posters on display in the main oval SF eres Bang school windows near the J C Penney Co window.
Longtime Preston star DeLyle H Condie, son of Mr and Mrs P M Condie, stars for the University of Utah basketball squad this season. The 20 year old sophomore is praised as a standout outside shooter and solid defender. Condie, a Preston High School graduate, is a pre med student and plays forward on a squad regarded as one of Utahs finest in school history.
