1955 Opera Sweethearts By Victor Herbert

Students and teachers plan for this year’s opera Sweethearts with director’s scores choir and solo scores arriving this week. Directed by Lyle Shipley with John Manning on orchestra Lois Sorenson dancing and Anna Mae Wilde dramatics. Tryouts after Christmas holidays, production the third week in February.

Scout Jamboree Set for Niagara-on-the-Lake August

Thane Packer from region 12 has been chosen to help run the world scout jamboree in Canada at Niagara-on-the-Lake Ontario August 18 to 28 1955. Victory Sharp calls the selection an honor for Packer and Cache council region 12 which includes California Nevada Arizona Hawaii Utah and southern Idaho. Cache council has a quota of four explorers for the event and only one applicant Dennis Earl son of L R Earl Mendon merchant and scout master has spoken to Lions Kiwanis and Rotary clubs about goals.

Elks Canned Food Show Gives Free Movie Saturday

Youngsters admitted Saturday morning to a western Gene Autry film by presenting one can of any food except canned milk. Proceeds fund Christmas baskets for area families.

First Two Tilts: Preston Indians Open Season With Wins

Preston Indians under coach Glen Oliverson opened the season with a 41 32 victory over the Logan Grizzlies on Wednesday and a 69 50 win against Aberdeen Co. The junior varsity also swept both games. Jon Hyde led with 10 points in the Logan game while Logan Kipner added 14. Duffin of Aberdeen had 21 points, Hobbs 20, and Hyde 18 in the Aberdeen win. The teams travel to Rupert Saturday for contests with the high school quintets.

West Side FFA Harvest Ball Listed with Festive Program

The West Side Future Farmers of America chapter held its annual harvest ball on November 24 preceded by a student assembly. Donald Woods hosted the assembly with Alma Winward Marlonill Jake Davies and Ranea Bing ham presenting vocal numbers. Preston FFA members Caroline Chadwick and Larry Smith accompanied. A parliamentary procedure panel included Jay Schwaneveldt Stephen Bastian Alma Winward Bill Taylor and Lyle Henderson. The event featured a carnival at 8 p m and the chapter sweetheart Evalyn Merrill with attendants Margaret Beutler and Karen Balls. Merrill received a white jacket and compact. Dancing followed the evening entertainment.

Cpl Harold Hebdon Participates in Fort Riley Maneuver

Cpl Harold J. Hebdon 23 son of Clifton residents took part in a three day combat rest at Fort Riley Kansas with the 1st Battalion 10th Infantry Division 87th Regiment The exercise tested fighting efficiency and field endurance Hebdon entered the army in February 1953 and was previously stationed at Camp Polk Louisiana.

Frida B Lund Among 26 New U S Citizens in Idaho

Mrs Frida B Lund of Preston RFD No 1 joined 25 other new citizens in a district court ceremony in Pocatello on November 18. The group included 19 Japanese Americans, many long awaiting citizenship. Lund, a Norwegian born in Stavanger, came to the United States in 1950 and married Leonard Lund January 11 1951. She has 11 siblings in Norway. The photo shows Lund with her little son Knute born December 27 and the two new citizens congratulating each other.

Orval Benson Elected Franklin County Farm Bureau Chairman

Orval D. Benson of Whitney was elected chairman of the Franklin County Farm Bureau at a county directors meeting in the courthouse on November 26. Gaylord Larsen Preston was named first vice chairman and Theo Smith Riverdale second vice chairman, with Hazen Gilbert Fairview chosen chairwoman of the women’s committee. Frank Gilbert joined the state board of directors at the Idaho Falls convention.

Franklin County fish and game banquet elects new directors

Officials praised the annual feed and dance at the high school drawing a huge crowd for dinner carnival and prizes. Four new directors were elected as Myron Pete Hender leads the first district amid announced voting results during the event.

Law Changes Expand Social Security Earnings Rules

Richard B. Weibye of the Pocatello social security office explains new rules effective January 1 1955. Beneficiaries under 72 may earn up to 1200 dollars per year in any employment without losing benefits. those 72 and older can earn more than 1200 while keeping their checks. Weibye will be at the Preston courthouse on Wednesday December 15 between 2 and 4 pm to discuss the changes.

Harris Named Franklin County District Scout Commissioner

Melvin L Harris of Preston was appointed district scout commissioner of the Franklin County district by district chairman O D Robinson. Harris succeeds Herman Richards and will begin duties immediately. He has held church and civic roles and worked 15 years for the postal service. Thane Winward Keith Nielsen Gilbert Cafferty Vern Hinckley assist. Earl Nelson is district explorer commissioner. Ward unit leaders may seek help from Harris and his staff.

Memorial award honors Nell Kilgore Klinge in Idaho show

The Boise Art Association awarded the late Nell Kilgore Klinge memorial prize to Marion Featherstone of Moscow for an oil landscape entry in the 19th Idaho Artists show at the University of Idaho. Featherstone is an outstanding University of Idaho art instructor. the show drew 83 works and features top Idaho professional and amateur artists.

West Side LDS seminary announces this year’s student council with Richard Hobbs as president and Roger Bastian as first counselor. Secretary Faye Houk of the Franklin county selective service board has been appointed treasurer of the county tuberculosis association.
