The Citizen announces a rate increase starting January 1944 with local subs at 2.60 and 3.00 outside county. servicemen reduced to 2.00 or 2.60 with discount. Six reasons cited include higher labor, newsprint, metal, ink, machinery costs, and taxes. aim to keep the paper solvent and support servicemen.
A Cemetery Maintenance District election held Monday at Preston placed Charles A. Nuffer as representative from the Third district, replacing Antone Jensen. E. T. Clayton was reelected from the Second district with no opponent. Joshua Rallison of the First district will serve two more years as holdover member, forming the cemetery committee for the Preston district.
Linrose ward members invite the public to join them at the ward house on Friday December 10 for a dinner and a bazaar of handiwork. The event begins at 8 o clock in the evening.
War department releases confirm PFC Joseph LaMar Stones of Franklin died from combat wounds in the Southwest Pacific. A Franklin High graduate and athlete, Stones enlisted September 15, 1942, trained in California, served in the Third Mormon Battalion, went overseas in January 1943, and had been stationed in New Zealand. Survived by his parents Lewis and Hilda Stones and multiple siblings, funeral plans forthcoming.
Plans are made for a joint court of honor for Franklin and Onleda in the Third ward chapel on Sunday December 19. It will be the largest meeting for awards this year for local scouts and the county troops anticipate prizes from the Preston chamber of commerce and other honors. Details will be announced next week.
Joseph H. Hall 74 died at his home December 6 after a lingering illness. Born November 28 1869 in Wellsville Utah he was a longtime Preston farmer and stockman. Survived by widow children grandchildren great grandchildren and several siblings. Funeral services set Friday at 1 p m in the Preston Second Ward chapel directed by his son Bishop Howard Hall.
Dr. J G Van Zandt of the U S Bureau of Highways reports a survey favoring Highway 91 through Preston as the main north south artery to Alaska The route is shorter and lower in total ascent than alternatives via Denver through Jackson Hole and the Park It would require a Boulder Dam to Kingman cut off and would connect Alaska with the Panama Canal plans call for Western states with Canada and Mexico to build the highway after the war ends
Mrs. Pauline VanNoy receives the Purple Heart and citation from the War Department for Pvt Junior VanNoy in the Pacific battle. A letter from Captain Sundquist lauds his courage and devotion to duty, noting his actions saved many lives and earned high gallantry awards. General Marshall also conveyed condolences to the family.
Seventy five or more scouts and seventy five or one hundred scouters participate in the University of Scouting at Preston covering Franklin Oneida and Benson stakes. Evening courses include merit badge work for scouts and training for scouters while YMMIA associations and scout committees are represented. Sessions run Wednesday and Friday nights at the Franklin stake house.
At the annual winter meeting of the Associated Civic Clubs of Southeastern Idaho in Pocatello delegates from eight counties urged private or enterprise operation free of heavy bureaucratic regulation. The program featured sessions and talks by leaders including Ben Johnson of Preston Donald Callahan of Wallace and R E Gale of Boise, promoting cooperation of mining farming and livestock to build Idaho industries. A Logan Utah official stressed state interests in harnessing natural resources for home industry.
The Citizen announces its Yuletitle edition to be issued December 22 and asks firms to submit messages by December 19. Engraved cuts are provided at no extra charge to sponsors, and copies will be sent to service members as a county gift.
Plans completed for a Preston chamber of commerce meeting at the high school auditorium on Wednesday evening December 15 at 8 p.m. Hon. Frederick P. Champ of Logan will speak with the Imperial Glee Club of Logan performing. Tickets issued free to chamber members for guests.
Wallace Leroy Chatterton died suddenly Wednesday morning after a lingering illness. He was born November 4 1889 in Franklin and was an elder in the Franklin ward. He married Almeda Bell Atkinson and is survived by his wife, several children, eleven grandchildren, and numerous siblings. Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 pm in the Franklin chapel, under Richards and Sons Mortuary.
The Preston Citizen plans a Christmas issue on December 22 with a full page of letters from service members. The paper asks families to send in letters from their boy or girl in uniform, promising space for many experiences and places served. Prompt submissions are requested to ensure representation.
County children aged two to ten are invited to a new story hour held every Saturday at 2 p m at the library. Martha Geddes supervised last year’s survey showing need. The Pickwick club, led by Mrs Grace Craner, sponsors the project with Mrs Margaret Walker coordinating. Donna Noys will arrange high school drama club members as primary story tellers each week.
The Patsy a three act comedy by Barry Conners will be presented Thursday December 16 at 8 00 pm in the high school auditorium. Patricia Harrington is teased by her mother and sister yet defended by her father as romance and humor unfold with Tony Anderson Grace Harrington and a strong cast of local student actors. Tickets are thirty five cents with reserved seats sold by students and Hart s Music shop starting this Saturday.
Prof B W Pittman USAC soil specialist returned from Iran spoke to Preston Lions and Rotary about Iran in 1940 shifting from pro Nazi to allied sympathies. He described Iran as a Middle East pivot and noted Americans enjoy more support there than with Britain or Russia. He explained Iran’s agriculture relies on ancient cannats canals and dam irrigation. He stressed Iranians are not aggressive.
The sheriff's office requests public assistance to report stray animals. Many owners seek their livestock after the fall roundup failed to include a number of cattle that strayed from hills and pastures.
Truck owners may obtain their gasoline ration books for the first quarter of 1944 at the War Price and Rationing Board office from December 27 to December 31, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Books not mailed unless specifically requested by the owner.
