Voters in the Eastside district approve rezoning into five trustee zones by a wide margin. Ballot tally shows 252 in favor to 14 opposed with an May election for board members. Zone divisions restructure prior districts including Banida and Preston areas.
Santa Claus visited Preston on Friday marking the season’s first appearance. He will return on December 1 with Miss Julie Ana Anderson and Joan Castleton for a Children’s Christmas program on December 13 at 1 pm. Santa will hand out candy sacks to children. Merchants Committee says events are free and stores will stay open until 8 pm on December 6 12 20 22 23.
Idaho State patrolman Eudean Gunnell was named to the Franklin Stake high council Sunday at the quarterly conference. Pres W Dean Palmer presided. Gunnell succeeds William Davis who has been called to serve a full time mission.
Mrs. Stephen Noyes and Mrs. Larry Jacobsen will fly to Washington D C next week to attend the National Farm Bureau convention after winning the Idaho Farm Bureau Entertainment Talent Contest. They will sing at meetings of the Golden Anniversary convention. Franklin County receives an Awards Program prize for yearly achievements and a trophy for information program work. Marlow C. Woodward, president of the county Farm Bureau, receives a trophy and a gold vest for reaching membership goals.
Sugar beet growers are reminded that proportionate shares will apply to the 1970 program year. Shares are based on history years 1969 68 and 67. New growers may qualify under certain conditions if they did not plant in a history year. Farmers interested in 1970 sugar beets should request by December 31 1969 at the Franklin County ASCS office according to Jean J Smith chairman Franklin County ASC committee.
The University of Idaho Agricultural Extension Service with County Agent Daniel Roberts sponsors a dairy calf equipment and nutrition school Tuesday at 10 30 a m at Theron Rawlings Dairy Farm in Fairview Southern Idaho dairymen from Fremont St Anthony Madison Oneida and Malad counties are expected to attend the session continued on page 4
Paul Johnson was named president and Wayne Doney as vice president of the Preston Chamber of Commerce at the Tuesday board meeting. New directors include Don Elwell J Walter Ross and Richard Bowman with terms of three and two years for various officers. annual installation set for Jan 12 with Al Minton as featured speaker.
First Bank and Trust announces temporary banking facilities will be set up in Preston soon while a new building is arranged. The move includes Master Charge services, with the bank partnering with Continental Bank and Trust Company of Salt Lake City.
Thatcher school planners stage the operetta Ring de Bells on December 12. Student leads include Trene Young Vera Young and others guiding singing while Loys Heth Conlin oversees casting and rehearsal.
A comprehensive water and sewer plan funded by a 5000 grant from Farmers Home Administration will be released December 10. Franklin County Planning Commission chair Kenton Fredrickson says the two year effort covers background studies and planning areas including city and regional water systems with 21 detailed maps and data from US Census and local agencies.
The Preston high school band directed by Arvel Hansen plans a Christmas concert Friday in the Preston High School Auditorium. The program spans classical to popular pieces with solos, twirling, and numbers by the Essex High School dance band. special school concerts are also scheduled Thursday and Friday.
Bert Gailey, acting police chief, was named chief of police by the Preston city council on Monday night. Ralph Spence Phillips, 22, of Logan, was named patrolman and released from the Army in May. he is currently with E A Miller and Sons Packing and has served on the Logan Police reserve.
For the first time in about 35 years the annual Rotary Cantata will have a new director. The change comes as Christ Lee introduces a fresh approach to the performance with revised choir parts and staging. Preston leads the cast in a refreshed program as rehearsals begin.
