Preston to Build 1.3 Million Dollar Water System

City crews survey and test soil along the pipeline route for Preston’s new 1.3 million dollar water system funded by a Farmers Home Administration loan. The project replaces a 12 inch Bergquist spring line with a 16 inch ductile iron main to boost supply, add storage, and support future growth.

Final Beet Checks To Be Mailed

Final payments on the 1968 sugar crop will be mailed in late October. Initial payments for the 1969 beet crop will go out November 15, per Dale Strong district manager of Amalgamated Sugar Company. Beet dumps at Cache Valley stations are being repaired for the harvest with Anderson dump converting to electric power to improve service.

Former Preston Girl Injured In Bear Lake Accident

Melanie Rigby, 14, daughter of Mr and Mrs Melvin Rigby now of Kaysville Utah but former Preston residents, remained serious in Logan hospital after a Bear Lake boating accident Saturday. Witnesses said she was on an inner tube beside a friend when a coming boat pulled a water skier. She dived to escape but hit the boat and was sucked into the motor. She was initially treated at Montpelier hospital before transfer to Logan. She is the granddaughter of Mr and Mrs Mallowe Funk.

Martin L Chapin assumed duties as manager of Van Gas Company on August 1 He has 14 years with the firm and is based in Preston after moves from Twin Falls Idaho He is married to Barbara Siver and the couple has three children Fred Coy moves from Preston to Salt Lake City to oversee Salt Lake and Heber Utah offices.

Franklin County Gains in Buying Power and Retail Activity

Franklin County income and spending rose according to Sales Management’s Survey of Buying Power. Residents’ net spendable earnings totaled 14.8 million with per family average of 37 066, fueling higher furniture and appliance purchases and overall strong local retail sales of 12.3 million. The county’s buying power index is 0.032, reflecting substantial non resident shopping contributing to the strength.

Fatally Injured Driver on Highway 91 Near Utah Idaho Line

Ralph L. Jensen 23 of Logan died Friday when his 1969 truck left Highway 91 near the Utah Idaho border, skidded into a barrow pit and rolled over. He was survived by a son, parents Clyde and Zella Beuhler Jensen, brothers Joseph of Malad and Rodney of Salt Lake City, and grandmother Mary Ann Beuhler. This marked the second death of the year compared with three at the same time last year.

West Side School Breaks Ground on New Commercial Ed Building

Superintendent Lyle Porter reports Ase A x School on the West Side started strong and a new classroom wing for commercial education is under construction. The foundation is laid, the building should be finished and in use by November first. About 450 students are enrolled and 27 teachers on staff. the first football game of the season is Friday against the Preston Indians.

Blaine Gambler, chairman of the Franklin County ASC Committee, announced that 19 wheat varieties are designated undesirable for 1970 due to inferior milling or baking qualities or milling incompatibility.
