Preston High School opens fall registration with assembly

Preston High School plans a 9 am Tuesday start for juniors and seniors with an assembly and teacher check for class selections. Busing runs 2 11 30 pm for upperclassmen and 1 pm return for freshmen and sophomores to follow the same procedure. Fees remain 12 dollars covering books and activities as six new staff join while the school operates with one fewer teacher due to rising costs.

Jefferson School Gets New Fixtures and Paint Job

Jefferson School has undergone interior improvements this summer including new lighting fixtures, a public address system, and classrooms repainted in eye friendly colors. Principal Elmo Keller says the upgrades will improve student and teacher morale and learning. fire safety is enhanced with newer, adequate fire escapes.

East Side School Election Nominees Named

The East Side district holds a trustee election next Tuesday with two nominees Daniel Roberts and Dr. David Cutter incumbent. Only residents on the east side of State Street may vote. Polls at Jefferson School open 1 to 6 p.m. The winner serves a three year term.

Officer Fern Cole Pleads Guilty To Impersonation Charge

Fern Cole of Preston, 26, acting as a deputy sheriff, pleaded guilty after waiving a preliminary hearing. Cole, arrested early this month by Sheriff Lee Hansen and Deputy Ray Fackrell, admitted posing as a deputy on multiple occasions and was found with a .38 caliber revolver. He remains in custody pending pre-sentence investigation.

Preston high students shine at gladioli show in Logan

Preston and other contestants paraded at the Cache County fair in Logan for a gladioli show. Winners included Lyle Shipley with six firsts and a grand champion for a bear geline spike, Carl P Nielsen with five firsts, Alfred Kern with two seconds and one third, plus multiple seconds and thirds awarded to several entries.

Registration At Jefferson Starts Tuesday

Jefferson school starts registration Tuesday at 9 a.m. for 4th to 6th graders with a $1.50 student fee covering lyceums and activities. 7th and 8th graders register on the main floor and basement with a $1.75 fee granting access to athletic events and other activities.

Oxford Girl Among 30 Idaho State Summer Session Honor Roll

Lola Jensen of Oxford graduated to the honor roll as one of 30 summer session students at Idaho State College. She majors in elementary education and earned A grades.

Grace schools set to open Tuesday September 2

Grace district officials announced the new term will begin Tuesday at 8 a.m with a faculty meeting. Buses will run to bring students by 1 30 p.m for registration and book distribution from 1 30 to 4 p.m. Classes start Wednesday morning with most teachers hired except one high school English vacancy.

Bennett to Assume Management of A H Recreation Parlor

Howard Bennett will take over active management of the A H Recreation parlor in Preston on Monday September 1. His father announces the change as Howard, long known in town, returns after years in the automobile business and a move from Salt Lake City. Bennett led local civic groups, including the Preston Jaycees presidency and Lions Club membership, and is a Marine veteran awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart.

Whitney man nominated Idaho Grassman of the Year

A. C. Hull Sr. of Whitney is named Franklin County representative for the statewide 1952 Idaho Grassman of the Year contest. The board cites his soil building, soil conserving grassland farming, alfalfa grass hay rotation, and seed production efforts totaling 77 acres seeded to grass with diverse varieties.

Franklin County shows strong buying power in 1951 sales

A Special to the Citizen reports Franklin County leads in high retail activity with cash registers totaling 8.944 million dollars, up from 8.904 million the prior year. The 2,600 families earned 9.765 million after taxes, averaging 3,756 dollars per family, reflecting a high standard of living. Continued on page 4.

Coach Pleased With Large Turnout for Indians Start at Gooding

Coach Oliverson reports the Indians opened drills with the largest turnout since his arrival, including 22 freshmen among 66 prospects. Practices include night sessions under new lights ahead of Monday’s season kickoff at Gooding and a home slate beginning Sept. 5 with four home games listed.

Beet Tour and Banquet by Franklin County Growers

Franklin County Fair lights up with events and new building

Franklin County Fair opened with 4-H clothing nutrition and rural electrification entries and judging set in the new fair grounds building. The 1952 schedule runs Friday and Saturday with flower, farm, livestock, dairy, and home economics judging, a 4-H style dress revue, and a junior rodeo parade and broom polo on Saturday night.

The West Side school district plans registration Monday September 1 inforenoon across all schools. Regular classes begin Tuesday with lunch program details to be announced. A teachers meeting at the high school is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. Five new teachers join the staff at the high school.

Polio Case in Preston Youth Shows Slow Recovery at Pocatello

Franklin county reports its first polio case of the season as 16 year old Harvey Henderson of Preston improves at St Anthony hospital in Pocatello. He had been in an iron lung since Saturday with bulbar polio and lung complications. A wartime nurse, Blake Patterson, volunteers to aid his care helping him regain breathing and mobility as he returns home on leave from Parks Air Force Base.
