Special Sugar Beet Awards Highlight Franklin County Fair

Franklin County Fair opens August 21 at the fairgrounds with special sugar beet contests. Franklin County Sugar Beet Growers and Amalgamated Sugar offer prizes for largest beet and top three beets, tops removed, plus 50 25 and 10 pounds sugar for the largest beet. Eldon Bingham urges growers to enter and showcase local production. The event includes 4 H Style Show August 20, horse show August 20, livestock judging August 21 22 23 and Fat Stock Sale August 22. Farm Bureau Fun Day closes the fair August 23 with open class horse show girls softball and Junior Fat Stock Sale.

Betty Miller Named Franklin County Home Economics Agent

Miss Betty Miller assumed the post of Franklin County Home Economics agent on Aug 1 succeeding retired Mrs Lucretia Maughan. A graduate of Teton High School Driggs Idaho Ricks College and Brigham Young University she taught home economics in several high schools and at Central Washington State College before joining the University of Idaho program overseeing 4 H girls work and county home economics efforts.

West Side board of trustees revised student standards requiring hair above the ears for boys and no short skirts for girls. Shirts inside and buttons fastened, no extreme dress, trimmed sideburns, clean shaven, and dresses not too short. Policy aims to prevent deterioration and codify expected conduct and attire.

Presto Indians Set For Early Football Preparations

This Saturday the Presto Indians receive football suits ahead of the season. The first game is at Preston against West Side on August 29. Official practice begins August 18 with morning sessions at 8 a.m. and field time at 8:30 a.m. Evening practice starts 6:30 p.m. with field time at 7 p.m. Suit issue on Saturday assigns letters by class from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and team meeting at 8 p.m.

Eastside school board to study re zoning petitions due next month

The Eastside board approved using senior government students to map district population for rezoning into five equal districts. Petitions calling for rezoning, now signed, must be acted on within 60 days after 50 names are submitted, with district adopting a plan for the state board.

The Preston Area Chamber of Commerce holds its first summer outing Friday at the Preston recreation park. General chairman is Lee Bergquist with committee members L. B. Logan Company Bids Low on New Preston Third Ward Church

Stettler Construction Company of Logan submitted the apparent low bid of 310 640 on the Preston Third Ward chapel. Six bids were opened. high bid was 329 000 from Richard Watts Construction. Work to start within a week. completion by Nov 1. furnishings may add 20 000 to 30 000. The new church will replace the Preston Third Ward building west of its current site.

Farming costs split between product and marketing, says committee chair

The committee chair Blaine Gamble explains that for every dollar a consumer spends on groceries, 40 cents purchases products and 60 cents covers marketing. He notes this average reflects the farmer's share amid other costs and industry structure.
