A full five member board will be elected in Preston class A school district No. 201 on Sept. 2 following state legislation. The district will be divided into five trustee districts and nominations close Aug. 26 with candidates filed through clerk Sarah Johnson.
The Franklin stake holds its quarterly conference this weekend with welfare and priesthood leadership sessions led by Thorpe B. Isaacson and Roscoe W. Eardly. General sessions run Sunday from 10 30 a m to 2 p m with closing events at 8 o clock under stake Mutual boards.
George D Balls of Dayton described the Centennial Nauvoo to Salt Lake trek at the Preston Rotary meeting. He, the only Franklin County participant, recalled warm welcomes, hospitality, and a mock Indian attack while tracing family settler roots back to 1868 Hyde Park. Max Golightly sang two bass solos during the program.
Gladiolus show set for Saturday at 11 a m in the Franklin County Courthouse recreation room with entries from Garland Logan Utah and Idaho Falls. Exhibits compete for ribbons cash prizes in 12 color classes and best arrangements. Judging by George N Soffe Salt Lake City vice president Utah Gladiolus Society.
Blaine Olsen of Ban ada will be the lone local player in Idaho Coaches association all star game in Boise. The 18 year old center for Preston Indian is among 25 western players chosen by coaches to face the eastern squad in the first such Idaho event. Olsen has practiced with the eastern squad for over a week and traveled to Boise with coach Bob Bunker attending the coaches meeting and game planning.
Woodrow Rasmussen, Franklin county ag conservation chair, outlined two wheat program options for farmers: purchase agreements and loans through the Commodity Credit Corporation. No. 1 grade wheat loan rates range from about 1.68 to 1.70 per bushel, with purchase agreements available until December 31 and ending April 30, 1948.
Oxford this week reports two accidents. Morris Helmandollar fainted after inhaling fumes from a large gasoline tank at the Karl Kendall ranch and was revived after an hour. Robert Anderson was bitten badly by two dogs during a dog fight and required ten stitches on his face.
Mrs Christina Jensen Shaffer aged 72 died Monday morning after a long life in Preston. She was born August 25 1874 to David and Julia Jensen and married George Shaffer May 27 1897 in the Logan temple. The first white girl born in Preston she served as a black teacher in Relief Society. Surviving are her husband seven children and 29 grandchildren. Funeral today at 2 p.m. in the First Ward chapel with Bishop Lyman Purser presiding. Burial in Preston cemetery.
Funeral services for Parley Merrill 85 longtime Weston resident were held Monday. Bishop Maurice Tingey conducted the service with speakers including Apostle J F Merrill and son-in-law Edgar Butler. Selections by Merrill family members and others honored the deceased.
Foundation work on the new church near Preston is complete with carpenters erecting the main structure. Rev. R. J. Kunkel announces the building will become St. Peter’s church serving Preston and nearby towns, featuring a 70 by 24 foot hall, basement, two sacristies, sanctuary, and a parish house for headquarters.
Persistent rains kept fields too wet for harvesting for nearly a week across Franklin County and neighboring areas. Harvest resumed Tuesday afternoon with hopes rain will pause, as wheat and other grain begin moving to Preston elevators though some quality loss noted.
Two cars collided Thursday at a street intersection near Preston and East streets. Westbound Lee Monson and northbound Ray Archibald were involved. neither was injured. One driver ignored a stop sign and the other lacked a valid driver's license, officers said.
Improve ment association officers will host the annual MIA four stake convention in Preston on August 23 and 24. Stake presidents Woodward Rasmussen and Lettie Condie announce departmental meetings with MIA officers and priesthood authorities from Franklin Benson Smithfield and Oneida stakes participating. The opening session at 7 p m August 23 will include stake MIA boards and priesthood authorities, followed by a 8 10 p m gathering for ward executives in the Franklin stake house.
This week's Lions Club program featured convention committee members led by chairman W. B. Garrett. Neff Boothe spoke on national conventions and reports from the San Francisco session were presented by delegates Keith Christensen and Floyd Diderickson. Guests Charles Crabtree and John Gibson were introduced.
The Franklin County Canning Center has processed about 7 500 cans of fruits and vegetables over the past month. Supervisor Lincoln Orme notes Riverdale apricots are in season and corn is coming on, with beans beets carrots apples pork and beans and meats canned. Appointments for canning are available at the center in the rock building basement on the high school grounds in Preston or by phone, with Mrs. Fenton Larsen the canning instructor also reachable by phone.
Approximately 100 volunteer workers including businessmen civic leaders city and county officials and church leaders will meet Friday night in the courthouse to launch the Friends of Scouting financial campaign. D Frank Fass will direct the effort as chairman and issue workers kits to prepare for the drive.
Junior Condie ace pitcher for the Preston Elks hurled a no hit game as they beat the Pocatello Athletic club 7 to 1 in a southeastern Idaho district tourney. The win sent the locals to the state softball tournament in Caldwell after a strong defensive showing and only one first inning walk.
Police report a Preston, Idaho officer W. A. Lenderman is jailed on suspicion of burglary after $2,000 in cash and $3,000 in checks vanished from the city building. Fingerprints matched prints found on a second story window. Lenderman denies involvement.
Elda Carlson leads an all girl choir in the musical Evangeline at the fourth ward chapel on August 27 to raise funds for new costumes. The program starts at 8 PM with soloists Lyle Shipley Pearl E Glenn Mary Jane Handy and accompanists Anna Moore Constance Davis.
