Franklin county farmers expect a strong small grain harvest by week’s end after rain delayed work earlier in the week. Local elevators paid today as farmers, some already harvesting, brace for a robust season despite rain and wind damages to fruit trees.
Elevator men forecast better yields and quality this season with wheat and barley testing high and more acreage than 1946. First loads arrived from local dry land farms with barley testing 50 pounds to the bushel, and wheat rated excellent for quality and yield amid recent rains. Prices ranged from 1.74 to 1.90 per bushel for new wheat and about 2.50 for barley.
The Preston American Legion post schedules a Friday 8 pm meeting in the courthouse basement. Commander Frank Evers notes a large backlog of business and urges all legionnaires to attend, including unaffiliated veterans.
The eighth annual Black and White fair and junior livestock show will be held in Grace on Friday and Saturday, August 15 and 16. The event attracts crowds with nine women’s divisions and junior and senior livestock sections, plus a horse pulling contest, baseball game, and other attractions.
Duane Duke Robinson manager of the J C Penny Company was elected to membership on the county board of education at a special meeting last Monday night. A new chairman and vice chairman will be named Monday night. Other members are Benj A Meek Guy O Woodward Cecil Foster and Orson Kofoed.
Preston police nabbed a neighborhood prowler early last week on a window peeping charge. The offender was fined 50 dollars and given 300 days in jail, though 80 days were suspended for one year on good behavior.
Preston to complete the first junior police units next Monday evening August 11. Police Chief Durwood Hull invites all boys aged 10 to 15 to attend a meeting at 8 p.m. in the city building to form squads with appointed captains lieutenants and sergeants and outline special duties.
A public meeting is set for Saturday at 2 p m in the courthouse at Preston to consider the proposed Franklin Soil Conservation district. All lands within Franklin county as of Jan 1 1946 owners lessees renters and interested parties may attend and voice opinions. A state soil conservation commission member will attend.
The state Fish and Game Association approves a proposed bird refuge in Franklin County. Ed Scholes reports the 850 acre area will be protected ground with no hunting. The boundary runs from Knudson Packing Co west of town, south one mile, west across Bear River to West Cache canal, then northwest to Linrose dugway and north to the Sheep.
David E. Davis announces in THE CITIZEN that he has moved from 15 South State to 311 South State where he will operate his coal feed seed and insecticide business in the future. Dee and Reid Wangsgaard of Logan have purchased the former site and opened a furnace and heating business.
City and county officers handled numerous rodeo related offenses including three boys brought before the judge for taking blankets from parked cars. A man faced a resisting arrest charge and was fined in city court. Three Logan youths were jailed for taking a tire and wheel from a jeep at the rodeo grounds and held on bond.
A Franklin woman’s coat donation sparks a grateful reply from Frat Regina Thaller in Munich. The letter chronicles eight years of scarcity since Allied bombings, loss of home, and relatives killed, yet faith remains a bright spot as the writer and mother thank the unknown sender for the coat and prayers.
The 1947 Preston Night Rodeo wrapped up after three nights of shows in fine weather drawing an estimated 15 000 to 16 000 attendees. Attendance grew nightly from about 4 000 to over 5 000 with a packed final performance. Top riders from multiple states competed including Dave Campbell the 1946 world champion bulldogger. A burglary on Monday morning caused a loss of rodeo funds, noted elsewhere in this issue.
C P Maughan of the state health department urged thorough washing of fresh produce before use to combat polio season risks. He also advised cooling and sanitary handling of milk. W P McClean planned a Preston visit to review the citys grade A milk ordinance.
Franklin County seeks certified teachers through County Superintendent Mark Hart. Regular certificate holders get precedence. emergency certificate holders need to qualify. Vacancies remain and former teachers considering a return are urged to apply promptly.
Franklin county 4 H club members prepare for their second postwar encampment a three day event from August 13 to 15 at Fish Haven on Bear Lake. Hyrum Ward of Clifton arranges buses for west side members with pickup info and times.
At the Cache County Fair in Logan from August 13 to 16 the Better Farming Electrically exhibit by Utah Power & Light showcases farm electrical equipment in a tent, including an electric kitchen and devices like hay hoists milking machines water pumps and electric fences with many other farm electrical demonstrations.
Two Preston high school students Charles Hobbs cornet and Nola Maughan flute are among 125 musicians at the third annual Brigham Young University music clinic. They have joined a newly formed 81 piece band drawn from registrants and gave its first public concert six days after formation.
A North American Gladiolus society rosette prize will be awarded at Preston Gladiolus show on August 16 to the exhibitor of the best bloom. J Neff Boothe received the prize and notes strong interest from Garland growers. George N Soffe will judge the Preston show. A second show by the Bonneville Gladiolus society is planned for Logan on August 10 with local growers invited.
A burglary early Monday at the city building on West Oneida street netted about 5000 in money and checks used to pay rodeo winners. A ladder aided access to the second floor where a small .22 revolver and a locked cabinet were breached. Police say the split cash and checks were placed back in the cabinet prior to the theft but ongoing inquiries yield few clues.
H W Homer of the Homer Tractor service 15 North State street now authorized dealer in Preston for the new Ford tractor and Deartown farm equipment he announces in an advertisement. He will have one of the new Ford tractors on display Thursday Aug 14 featuring hydraulic system four forward speeds and 22 advantages for faster farming inviting local farmers to view the tractor.
Funeral services were held in Brigham City for Christian Alfred Monson 64 who died of a heart attack. He served as Utah state traffic officer for Oneida Franklin and Bear Lake counties and was a Preston peace officer. Survived by six children, one sister, and seven grandchildren. Burial in Preston City Cemetery.
About 40 000 ex Navy veterans in the inter mountain region began receiving the American Defense Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Preston area veterans can collect their medals next Wednesday or the following week at the post office from 9 am to 4 pm. Bring original discharge form to qualify, the recruiter announced.
Miss Donna Beth Oliverson of Franklin was crowned queen of Preston's twelfth annual Famous Night Rodeo after a contest featuring five county queens. Oliver son is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Lynn Oliverson of Franklin.
