A Monday meeting ended with a tie on motions to cut six teachers and to close Whitney school, with the chair refusing to break the ties. If the tie stands Whitney will have only three teachers next year.
The Preston public library will stop issuing student cards effective May 15. Ada Hansen the librarian says the $1 fee can be credited toward a family card. Some students living outside Preston used the cards but the board approved ending the program citing misuse and unclear purpose.
The Preston Cemetery board appeals to visitors to refrain from placing artificial flowers on graves. Sexton James B. McQueen says wire stems damage lawnmower blades and harm the grounds.
The Preston Golf and Country Club will officially open the season this Saturday with a nine hole event using the Calloway system. Sherwin Webb, club president, expects a large turnout and urges early entries. Free refreshments will be served. the event is open to members and non members, with registration at the pro shop.
The council approved a park maintenance contract after a bid of 1187 dollars for the summer work. Mayor Cranney said last year city crews spent about 4200 dollars to maintain the park. The bid was let to save money and Bill Godfrey was hired to rate the recreation program for the summer.
The annual senior review at Preston High School will be held on May 6 starting at 8 p.m. Tickets purchased for the April 30 date may be used on May 6. The event was postponed due to illness among cast members.
About 125 residents attended a Monday night program on the Preston Street improvement project. Mayor Cranney and engineer Wendell Smith outlined the plan, noting district formation requires 60 percent of affected property owners petitions and that final costs would be set after engineering work and public hearings. The total estimate runs around 850000 to pave about eight and a half miles with full-width streets, curbs, and utilities, with funding through bonds and owner assessments over several years.
FFA members returned home from Rexburg Friday with three scholarships from Rick's College awarded for high honors in the crops and seed judging contest. Johnson, son of Mr and Mrs Frank Jolson, won 1st with a score of 15 out of 16 and a $1500 scholarship. Keith Wheatley, son of Mr and Mrs Bert Wheatley, earned a $7500 scholarship for 2nd place. The team totaled 310.2 of 324.0 points. Madison High and St. Anthony placed 2nd and 3rd. Eleven teams competed. judges evaluated weed, crop, barley, oats, alfalfa, and wheat samples. The contest was arranged by Professor Bhauser of Rick's College. Lynn Womack, Vance Christiansen, and Stephen Moser also participated in judging but were not on the official team.
