Infant Dies From Burns In Preston Fire
Sixteen month old Luane Banks died after a house fire caused by a coal fire for oven heating in Preston. The mother had left to visit a neighbor with the baby. rescue attempts failed as flames trapped the child. The home owned by Leonard Pitkin was a total loss with 4000 to 4500 dollars in damage. Funeral services are set for Friday at Richards and Sons.

Beets Could Meet County War Planting Quota With More Acreage
Franklin County sugar plant head Jed Lewis says with a little more beet planting the county may reach the 7,500 acre wartime quota. About 5,000 acres are already in beets but a 4 to 6 percent drop could prevent hitting the target unless farmers switch land from irrigated alfalfa. Japanese laborers will arrive to assist farmers, with options for full or part time contracts via the U S Employment Office or the Franklin County Sugar Co.
