Man Freed After Nearly Seven Hours Buried in Trench

A 23 year old workman from Manchester Maryland named Dave Baer was rescued after being buried under earth and rock for six hours and fifty minutes in an 18 foot deep trench while workers connected sewer lines in suburban northeast Baltimore. He survived exhausted but uninjured aside from fatigue. His fellow worker Herschel Williams, 24, of Butler Md., was freed earlier when the cave in began. Firefighters and other workers labored to shore up the trench as rescue efforts continued throughout the night, with oxygen delivered through a hose and temporary steps dug to reach Baer. The two men were working at the bottom of the trench when the cave in occurred. Baer was carried from the trench at 10:20 p.m., still conscious and in good condition despite exhaustion.

Beck Emeritus Status Rejected by Teamsters

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters voted to strike the emeritus provision that would have granted retiring president Dave Beck emeritus status and a $50,000 annual salary. Beck requested the change, opposed by Chicago VP William A. Lee, as Hoffa campaigns for the presidency amid internal splits and AFL-CIO alignment worries. Judge Letts in Washington blocked next week's Teamsters election in Miami Beach by granting a temporary injunction to New York members, signaling ongoing AFL pressure.
