Five Pamir Survivors Reach Casablanca After 54 Hours At Sea

Five cadets and crewmen who survived the sinking of the Pamir told of a 54 hour Atlantic ordeal before rescue in Casablanca. Only one of 81 men on the vessel has been found. the survivors arrived aboard the Geiger. Karl Otto Duommer led the account, describing the capsize and chaotic dives as the ship sank.

Court Weighing Teamster Union Vote Ban Appeal

The U S Court of Appeals weighs a temporary injunction banning the Teamsters from electing new national officers next week. Seek Pilot of Crashed Navy Jet Off San Clemente Island

A large air and sea search was renewed for a Navy pilot who bailed out from an FSF Cougar jet fighter before it crashed in the sea near San Clemente Island. Poor fog hampered the effort as the plane took off from Miramar NAS near San Diego on Friday training. The pilot radioed his bailout at 11 45 am and his wingman saw the parachute open before circling back to see burning oil. The search resumed with Coast Guard cutters, Navy destroyers, a seaplane, and helicopters between the island and the main.

Bright Atom Shot Fired at Nev. Site

A vivid report describes the 23rd test in the Nevada atomic series, code named Charleston. The explosion occurred 1500 feet above the desert, producing a 30,000 foot mushroom cloud and a brief pinkish glow. Observable from Las Vegas and Long Beach, the blast was stronger than 20,000 tons of TNT and lasted about 42 seconds. Four Reported in Mountain Plane Crash Near Weed

Search resumed today for an unidentified light airplane reported to have crashed on Mt Eddy near Shasta. Sheriff officials said four people observed the crash and fire at about 3 15 p m Friday, but a three hour air and ground search found no wreckage or trace of survivors.

Auto Crash Kills Four Near Napa

Four men died when an Auto crashed into a stalled truck six miles southeast of Napa. Three victims were Travis Air Force base enlisted men. Airman Arthur Lowndes 22 Airman Larry Bock 22 Sgt William Flannery 34 and Fairfield driver Joe Silva Barboza 43 perished. Barboza had stalled the westbound truck on a sweeping curve.

Two Die in Light Plane Crash Near Ephrata Washington

A small aircraft crashed nine miles north of Vartine in Grant County on Friday night. The sheriff identified the dead as pilot Dr. John van der Loan and passenger William Sutton, both of Muskegon Michigan. Survivors were Dr. Ed Heneveld and Dr. Everett Lang, also of Muskegon.

Dutch, Norway Ships Damaged in Helland

A fire in Rotterdam harbor damaged the 21,119 ton motorship Willem Ruys of the Rotterdam Lloyd line. An explosion hit the 15,800 ton Norwegian tanker Bello at Amsterdam. A Swedish sailor was killed and others were injured in the incidents.

Navy Fliers Ordered to Shoot Craft Over 6th Fleet

Vice Admiral Charles R. Brown ordered American interceptors to shoot down a suspected hostile aircraft over the U S 6th Fleet in the eastern Mediterranean. The unidentified plane, believed Russian, passed near Turkish amphibious forces and Bulgaria, with a later low pass triggering an Alert One readiness.

Bus Flips Killing One and Injuring Eighteen in Trenton

A Greyhound bus skidded on a slick highway near Trenton Georgia and overturned in a roadside ditch along U S Highway 11. One woman identified tentatively as Roseger Walker, 64, of Alabama City Alabama, was killed. eighteen others injured. The driver J M Lawson said the bus went out of control on a curve in a washboard section, crossing the highway before overturning on its left side.

Guard Arrested in $15,000 School Theft Ring

Sheriff's deputies arrest 59 year old Long Beach guard Arthur Zewisy Gaulin on grand theft and burglary charges tied to more than $13,000 in Whittier Union High School District property. A six year theft spree culminated at his Norwalk home garage filled with tape recorders and tools. Gaulin collapsed from a heart attack while police recovered more loot, and he was jailed in a hospital ward.
