Uncle Gains Custody of Brother's Orphans
In Redwood City a 54 year old Negro man, Air Force Sgt. Benjamin Gaines, was awarded custody of his late brother's four children. Superior Court Judge James J. O'Keefe emphasized the decision was not racially motivated and favored adoption by Gaines and his wife as the best path for a growing family. The grandparents, Chester Rygiewicz of Milwaukee and his wife, would have faced an unfeasible delay, with the children aged 4 to 10. The family plans temporary housing near Hamilton Air Force Base while settling permanent arrangements near San Francisco.
