Winter testimony on stock purchase by Haynsworth colleague
Judge Harrison Winter told the Senate Judiciary Committee he would have avoided buying Brunswick stock tied to a court case involving Judge Clement Haynsworth Jr. He said the $16,000 stake on December 20, 1987, did not affect his view of Haynsworth’s integrity. Winter noted he would have waited until the opinion was filed before purchasing and believed he would not be legally disqualified since the matter was resolved. The hearings focus on Judge Haynsworth’s Supreme Court nomination amid debate over potential conflicts of interest.
